With two vessels equipped with ABB's all-electric propulsion system approved for commissioning on October 6, 2020, cruise ship passengers will be able to experience one of nature's wonders without being disturbed by exhaust fumes, engine noise or vibration.
The zero-emission ferry – named James V. Glynn and Nikola Tesla, respectively, in honor of the Girl in the Mist chair and renowned energy pioneer – is the first all-electric boat built in the United States, powered by a high-capacity battery pack supplied and integrated by ABB. In addition to batteries, ABB offers integrated power and propulsion solutions for newbuild vessels, including onshore charging systems, for sustainable operations with maximum reliability.
"Maid of the Mist has always evolved with technology, and we are excited to turn a new page in our company's history as we move our fleet to zero-emission operations," said Maid of the Mist President Christopher ·. M. · Green said. "The close collaboration with ABB has contributed to the success of this project, and we are proud of what we have achieved together."
Juha Koskela, President, Maritime & Ports, ABB, said: "In addition to allowing passengers to enjoy the spectacular experience of Niagara Falls and protect the environment, these vessels are a testament to the growing acceptance of all-electric ship propulsion. "We applaud Maid of the Mist's decision to move to zero-emission operations and are honored to partner with this forward-thinking company on the implementation of power and propulsion solutions."
The James V. Glynn and Nikola Tesla are each powered by a pair of battery packs with a total capacity of 316 kWh, distributed over two catamaran hulls, providing a level of redundancy to help safeguard operations. The battery enables the electric propulsion motor to output up to 400 kW, and the power settings are controlled by ABB's power and energy management system. They are recharged using locally produced hydroelectric power – ensuring that the energy cycle operated by the Maid of the Mist ferry is completely emission-free – in just 7 minutes during disembarkation and embarkation.
After installing the ship-to-shore battery charging connection, ABB provided Glynn and Tesla with a comprehensive range of electrical, digital and connectivity solutions, including switchboards, drives and diagnostic systems for integrated control systems for monitoring and predictive maintenance, in addition to ABB Ability™ Marine Remote.
