ABB marks the start of construction of its new plant in San Giovanni Valdarno, Italy, which will become the world's preeminent center and production base for electric car charging infrastructure. The 16,000-square-meter facility is expected to be operational by the end of 2021.
As a global market leader in electric car solutions, the $30 million investment in this new device is further proof of ABB's continued commitment to innovation in this rapidly growing segment. This follows a new $10 million investment in a fully sustainable global electric car headquarters and research and development (R&D) center on the campus of Delft University of Technology in Heertjeslaan, Netherlands, which will be officially launched later this year.
The new plant will produce ABB's entire portfolio of battery chargers for direct current (DC) electric cars, from domestic systems to installations in public areas and dedicated systems for urban public transport. It will also help to further support ABB's growth and innovation in the electric car segment.

The new equipment features the integration of the ABB AbilityTM digital solution. They will promise complete visibility and optimization of the production of each individual product, as well as the interconnection of automated warehouse management systems with the factory sector. Automation equipment for assembling printed circuit boards and monitoring and testing systems will be connected to the plant information system.
R&D activities will take place in a dedicated space of 3,200 square meters for development and prototyping. They will focus on implementing innovative solutions, new software, and product lifecycle management tools to integrate R&D activities with production activities, internal and external electronic production services.
Together, the integration of renewable energy sources such as rooftop solar panels, optimized heating and cooling systems, and the introduction of electric fleets for employees, logistics, sales and service teams will help reduce the environmental impact of the equipment.
