The $150 million investment will strengthen ABB's leading position in China, the world's largest robotics market
The factory will open in early 2021 with the latest automated and digitized manufacturing processes
ABB announced today that it has begun construction of a new robotics manufacturing and research facility in China, the world's largest robotics market. The facility is expected to open in 2021 with a total investment of US$150 million (1.1 billion yuan).
The new 67,000 m2 facility in Kangqiao, near Shanghai, will deploy the latest manufacturing processes, including machine learning, digitalization, and collaboration solutions. It will be the most advanced, automated and flexible factory in the global robotics industry – a hub for robot-made robots. The new facility will also feature an on-site R&D center, which will help accelerate innovation in artificial intelligence (AI). The center will serve as an open innovation hub where ABB works closely with its customers to develop automation solutions tailored to their individual needs.
ABB's robotics solutions serve a diverse customer base in Asia, supporting automotive manufacturers, especially electric vehicle manufacturers, as well as manufacturers in a wide range of sectors, including electronics, food and beverage, pharmaceutical, logistics automation, and general industries. ABB predicts that global robot sales will grow from $80 billion today to $130 billion by 2025. China is the world's largest robotics market; One of the three robots sold worldwide in 2017 was sold to China.
Peter Voser, Chairman and CEO of ABB, said: "The inauguration of the new plant is another milestone in ABB's development in China and will further strengthen our leadership position in the world's largest robotics market. Since the project was announced in October last year, we have received strong support from the local government. It is a great honor for ABB to be selected as one of the top 10 projects in 2019 "Made in Shanghai". ”
Local Chinese dignitaries, ABB customers and ABB senior executives attended today's groundbreaking event.
The digital factory of the future
Production in highly automated factories will be based on automated cells rather than fixed assembly lines, which will allow robots to move from one site to another for greater customization and flexibility compared to traditional linear production systems. Automated guided vehicles (AGVs) will deliver parts to production robots in a timely manner, while the latest collaborative technologies will ensure that humans and robots can safely work side by side, bringing greater flexibility and agility to the production process, and combining the advantages of robots with the unique capabilities of humans.
The plant will be a complete digital manufacturing ecosystem, employing a "digital twin" that will provide data insights and machine learning capabilities to everyone from managers and engineers to operators and maintenance teams to improve performance and maximize productivity. ABB will use a machine learning-based system to inspect the robots as they are assembled to ensure the highest quality standards.
"As a leader in China's industrial robot market, we are proud to support Chinese industry in strengthening its manufacturing sector. Despite short-term market challenges, China's growth as a global manufacturing hub, the ongoing trend of mass customization, and the growing shortage of skilled labor will continue to create strong and enduring demand for automation solutions in the region," said Sami Atiya, President of ABB's robotics and discrete automation business. "In the coming years, we estimate that the breadth and depth of our portfolio will almost double. This meant that we needed a factory that could produce a wider variety of robots and effectively scale production to adapt to changing market conditions and technological trends," Atiya adds.
ABB Robotics has three plants around the world: The new plant in Shanghai will replace the existing one to support customers in Asia. The plant in Westeros, Sweden, supplies customers in Europe, while the Auburn Hills plant in Michigan supports the Americas.
