He discussed the future role of turbochargers with sustainable fuels
Turbochargers are often associated with noisy, polluting internal combustion engines, but they actually help make internal combustion engines significantly more efficient. In the latest episode of the ABB Decoded podcast, Daniel Bischofberger, CEO of Accelleron (formerly ABB Turbocharging), discusses how turbochargers are accelerating the sustainable transformation of the industry.
Accelleron's turbochargers are used in heavy-duty applications, including marine, power, off-highway and locomotives. "The turbocharger acts as a ventilator for the engine," Bischofberger explains. Internal combustion engines with turbochargers deliver four times more power while reducing carbon emissions by 10 percent, improving efficiency by 10 percent, and reducing nitrogen oxide (NOx) emissions by up to 60 percent. For example, he shared that a ship equipped with an Accelleron turbocharger could save 200 tons of fuel per year and reduce 620 tons of CO2 per year.
According to Bischofberger, turbochargers will continue to play a key role in industry in response to the growing demand for climate action. For example, in order to decarbonize the shipping industry, turbochargers are essential to improve engine efficiency and thus reduce fuel consumption. As fuels become more available in the future, improving engine efficiency will become even more important, as these fuels will be more expensive than fossil fuels in the first place.
Bischofberger also points out that a complete transition from fossil fuels to renewable energy in the power sector will require a significant increase in the production of renewable electricity. "The challenge will be the sheer amount of sustainable energy required," he said, adding that grid stability will be a challenge due to the variability of solar and wind energy. He further explained how to use a thermal power plant running on green fuels to provide backup power during peak hours and avoid these potential disruptions. The turbocharger will ensure efficiency and reduce environmental impact.
"There is a misconception in most people's minds that a net-zero world and the internal combustion engine cannot coexist. It may come as a surprise, but engines with high-performance turbochargers in the marine and power sectors will become even more important in a net-zero world," Bischofberger adds.
Accelleron manufactures approximately 10,000 turbochargers and services more than 100,000 turbochargers annually through a team of 600 service engineers in more than 100 service centers around the world. A global service network ensures reliability, which is especially important for mission-critical applications.
Bischofberger also highlighted the advanced digital solutions that Accelleron offers to its customers that help them optimize engine performance, reduce fuel consumption, and monitor and predict ship emissions.
