The ABB solution supports PKN Orlen's goal of reducing CO2 emissions by 30% per tonne of product, primarily ethylene and propylene

ABB partnered with Hyundai Engineering and Técnicas Reunidas to install its market-leading distributed control system (DCS) ABB Ability™ System 800xA at the new Olefin III complex in Plock, Poland. By integrating the ABB Ability™ System 800xA control architecture throughout large-scale development projects, PKN Orlen will be able to monitor and analyze plant productivity in real time, maximize asset performance, manage power consumption, ensure product quality and optimize process efficiency.
Using these continuous data streams, the company will be able to make more accurate and informed decisions to drive efficient use of energy in line with its goal of reducing CO2 emissions by 30% per ton of product. This includes maintaining strict controls over raw material consumption, plant energy levels, and waste by-products.

In addition to the DCS, ABB will provide several systems designed to ensure that the complex operates at an optimal level of safety, including a burner management system (BMS), an emergency shutdown system (ESD) and a high-integrity pressure protection system (HIPPS). These will be complemented by an industrial cybersecurity solution focused on mitigating cyber threats to the complex.
Olefins form a base compound composed of hydrogen and carbon that produces a wide range of everyday products, including cleaning, hygiene, and medical products, including synthetic fibers for protective clothing and face masks (PPE). The global market was valued at USD 232.45 billion in 2020 and is expected to reach USD 329.3 billion by 2028 at an annual growth rate of 4.5%. 1 This exponential growth is driven by consumer demand and increased global plastic use in the industry.
The project is scheduled to be completed in 2024 and operations begin in 2025. To support this timeline, ABB will apply its unique project approach, Adaptive Execution™. Adaptive Execution™ leverages virtual engineering and digitalization to deliver a simplified, standardized, and agile experience for all stakeholders. With this approach, ABB can reduce delivery time by up to 30 percent, start-up time by up to 40 percent, and overall capital costs associated with automation by up to 40 percent.
