The difference between "four" and "six" in industrial robots

Among the four-axis SCARA robots and six-axis articulated robots, the four-axis robots are specially planned for high-speed pick-and-place operations, while the six-axis robots provide higher flexibility in production movements.

Four-axis robot

The first two joints of the SCARA robot are able to rotate freely left and right in the horizontal plane. The third joint consists of a metal rod and gripper. The metal rod is capable of moving up and down in a straight plane or rotating around its straight axis, but not skewed.

This unique planning gives four-axis robots a high degree of rigidity, allowing them to perform high-speed and repetitive jobs. In packaging use, four-axis robots excel at high-speed pick-and-place and other material handling tasks.

Six-axis robot

Six-axis robots have two more joints than four-axis robots, so they have more "degrees of freedom".

The first joint of the six-axis robot can rotate freely in the horizontal plane like a four-axis robot, and the last two joints can move in a straight plane. In addition, the six-axis robot has one "arm" and two "wrist" joints, which gives it the ability to have similar abilities as a human arm and wrist.

The fact that the six-axis robot has more joints means that they are able to pick up parts that are oriented arbitrarily on the horizontal plane and place them in the packaged product with a special viewpoint. They are also able to perform many operations that are performed by skilled workers.
