Berthold Hermle AG is one of the world's leading manufacturers of milling machines and machining centers. When it comes to the automation of its machining centers, Hermle relies on the expertise of KUKA Roboter GmbH from Augsburg. The company is able to take advantage of the new production system RS 4 with the advantages of the KR 1000 titan. With an unrivalled load capacity of up to 1,000 kg, titan provides the prerequisite for the Hermle machining centre's ambition for fully active loading and unloading of heavy components such as those presented in the east-west and mould-making industries.

Implementation Approach/Solution

In the Hermle RS 4 machining center, the KUKA KR 1000 titan, the pallet magazine and one or two 5-axis machining centers C 50 U are dynamically integrated into a high-performance production system. With a transfer capacity of up to 1,000 kg, the robot system is used for the full active machining of heavy castings and aluminium components. Pallet loading and unloading can be carried out in parallel in the production system using the installation position monitored by the sensors.

Outcome/Effectiveness

The mission of the KR 1000 titan is to load and unload pallets full of components. With its actively interchangeable robots, KUKA robots can transport very different workpieces directly without any problems. Pallet transfers and workpiece transfers can be carried out in a split second without the need for manual operator intervention. When working, the titan is located in front of the machining center and is maintained by a well-designed portal security system. Both the robot system and the machining center can be operated manually without affecting the automation process of the other cell.
