Yaskawa Electric, one of the world's largest manufacturers of industrial robots, announced a 150% year-on-year increase in net profit for the six months ended Sept. 30.
The Japan company reported a record $184 million in quarterly profits due to demand for its industrial robots in China, Japan and the United States, according to an Oct. 24 report by Nikkei Asian Review, which said it was a very important issue.
Yaskawa provides automated product and setup operations such as arc welding, assembly, coating, dispensing, material handling and cutting. The company also owns industrial robots under the Motoman brand and attributed the growth to increased orders for automation equipment from China, Japan and the United States.
Yaskawa United States' Motoman Robotics division was founded in 1989 and claims to have installed more than 360,000 Motoman robots worldwide.
Hiroshi Ogasawara, president of Yaskawa Electric, predicts that the market for robots and other devices will grow in the future.
"The demand for automation from Chinese manufacturers will continue to grow," he said.
This year, industrial robot manufacturers expect to sell 346,000 units, up 18% from 2016. The Germany-based International Federation of Robotics says China, Korea and Japan are the top three buyers of robots.
In 2016, sales of robots reached about $13.1 billion, and automakers are the largest buyers of such technology. IFR reports that the total value, including software and other related businesses, will increase the market valuation to $40 billion.
