Today we share with you the case of ACMI S.p.A., an Italy company dedicated to the production of high-end filling and packaging lines, to see how they do the safety protection of canning lines.
Let's start with their process......
The mineral water bottling line is capable of filling 44,000 rectangular bottles of 1.5 litres per hour. In order to ensure that the system operates smoothly and efficiently at very high speeds, the safety and effectiveness of the entire process must be monitored.
Risk assessment of complex processes
Thanks to the automation of the production line, a large filling line can be equipped with only three operators. A is responsible for the area of the blower and filler, B is responsible for manually loading the labels into the labeler, and C is responsible for the process steps at the end of the line.
In order to avoid the risks associated with the operation of different machines and to protect the operator, ACMI consulted Pilz to carry out an inspection and risk assessment of the various parts and interfaces of all equipment (e.g. handlers, palletisers, storage machines, etc.) in accordance with the applicable standards and regulations. Pilz examines and documents the risks that arise during the life cycle of the machine on site, carries out risk assessments on this basis, and draws up strategies and protective measures to reduce production risks.
"The risk assessment at Pilz is the basis for us to determine the appropriate protective measures. Pilz's expertise in machinery safety gives us peace of mind. Gianluca Contesso, Safety Product Manager at ACMI, said.
Maximum flexibility in production: The safety controller is at the core
In the retrofit ACMI line, the safety functions are monitored by the configurable small controller PNOZmulti 2. The non-contact safety switch PSENcode, which is mounted on the safety door of the production line, meets the highest safety requirements according to EN ISO 13849-1 and EN IEC 62061 and meets PLe and SILCL 3. The non-contact safety switch PSENcode mounted on the safety gate meets the highest safety requirements. The integrated analysis and standard interfaces mean that the safety switch is "compatible" with products from other manufacturers.
With tools in hand, monitor the production line and get it easily
If the configuration of the sensor in the early stage of design is not reasonable, it is often necessary to order a large number of additional accessories, resulting in an increase in the overall project cost. The PNOZmulti Configurator provides customers with intuitive software and hardware parameters, simplifies the selection and installation process from the source, and significantly reduces the number of accessories such as cables required after a scientific configuration. In addition, online diagnostics via the PNOZmulti Configurator allow direct access to the status of the protective device, so that the field operator can immediately identify and address issues such as error stacks and diagnostic data.
After a series of risk assessments and safety improvements, the entire production process is now safer and smoother, and there is no longer any need to worry about operators being exposed to risks.

Pilz: Guard locking and safety interlocks in functional safety
In machinery safety, if it is an access door that prevents entry into the hazardous movement area, it is usually necessary to use a safety interlock switch to realize the "linkage" between the access door and the movement of the hazardous equipment, and when the access door is opened, the dangerous movement stops. In some cases, it is also necessary to prevent the access door from being hit.

Peel magnetic relays – what is the difference between a relay and a contactor
1. The effect is not the same:
The primary effect of the relay is: signal detection, transmission, conversion or disposal, the circuit current it is on and off is generally small, and it is generally used in the control circuit to control weak signals.
The primary effect of the contactor is to turn on or off the main circuit. Host...

Common faults of Pilz safety relays with contacts and how to deal with them
The most common ones are the following:
(1) Contact failure
1. The phenomenon that cannot be disconnected due to mechanical occlusion of the contact (the needle-like protrusion formed on the contact and the pit biting each other), fusion welding, or cold welding.
2. Due to the contact resistance becoming large and unstable, the circuit cannot be normal ...

Peel magnetic relay - the cause and solution of the fault of the high voltage relay
1. Some common faults of high-voltage relay coils
1. The common fault cause of the coil is often disconnected: whether the ultrasonic wave is used to clean the high-voltage relay, or whether the overvoltage is added to the coil will also promote the probability of the coil being disconnected.

Steps for using Pilz safety relays
Pilz safety relays consist of several relays and circuits to compensate for each other's abnormal defects and achieve the full functionality of a relay with low misoperation or even correct relays. The lower the fault value and fault, the higher the safety factor. In order to prevent unavoidable misoperation or natural wear and tear of the machine, it should also be ...

Peel Magnetic Relays – Difference Between Voltage Relays and Current Relays
1. The difference between the structure of current relay and voltage relay
The main thing is that the coils are different.
The coil of the current relay is connected in series with the load to reflect the load current, so its coil turns are small and the wire is thick, so that the voltage drop when passing through the current is very small, and it will not affect the load circuit.

The working principle and characteristics of Pilz safety relays
Pilz safety relays generally consist of an iron core, a coil, an armature, a contact reed, etc. As long as a certain voltage is added to both ends of the coil, a certain current will flow through the coil, resulting in an electromagnetic effect. Under the action of electromagnetic attraction, the armature overcomes the pulling force of the return spring and sucks in the iron ...
