As the world's leading steel producer, ArcelorMittal focuses on the latest production technologies. The goal is to continuously improve the safety and efficiency of the production process. This includes monitoring the burners in the combustion furnaces of its cold rolling mills: Ghent's equipment is used to refine steel coils (strip coils) according to customer requirements. However, in order to form steel strip by cold pressing, it must first be heat treated. The 50 main burners, supplied by 30 starting burners, heat the high-temperature furnace to a constant 1200°C. When a burner fails, there is often significant downtime and laborious troubleshooting. After the Pilz retrofit, the automation system PSS 4000 is available thanks to faster fault diagnosis and other advantages.
Interference-free operation
In addition to the PSS 4000, ArcelorMittal commissioned Pilz to carry out a complete retrofit of the plant. One of the challenges of this retrofit is the need to frequently shut down the starting burner, which is ignited by the main burner. This repetition can lead to long interruptions in the process. Existing burner control modules and flame monitoring via UV units were not the best solution: if one of the units failed, the entire plant was usually shut down for more than 40 minutes. When looking for a defective UV unit, analysis options are limited, so valuable time is wasted. The current solution is to replace the UV detector with ionization, and the tasks of the burner control module are performed by the burner management software package of the PSS 4000 automation system. Now, thanks to the quick diagnostic option, the process can be run with little to no interference, and downtime is reduced thanks to the effective visualization in the control cabinet, which shows the exact status of 10 burners in a row.
