Honeywell announces the launch of a new green hydrogen production technology

Honeywell's new catalyst coating films improve efficiency and performance, while helping to reduce the cost of producing green hydrogen

The catalyst-coated film is the result of Honeywell's extensive experience in developing high-performance thin film technologies and will be further tested by electrolyzer manufacturers

Des Plaines, Ill., United States, March 17, 2022 – Honeywell (NASDAQ: HON) today announced a new catalyst-coated membrane (CCM) green hydrogen production technology and will work with electrolyzer manufacturers to further test the technology. The production of green hydrogen by electrolysers powered by renewable electricity to convert water into hydrogen and oxygen is expected to play an important role in the energy transition in the coming decades. According to the Hydrogen Council, total global demand for hydrogen will increase by a factor of 5 to 7 over the next 30 years.

Honeywell's innovative technology is focused on catalyst coating films for proton exchange membrane (PEM) electrolyzers and ion exchange membrane (AEM) electrolyzers.

Honeywell's latest catalyst-coated membranes feature breakthrough proprietary high-ionic conductivity membrane technology and highly active catalysts. Laboratory tests have shown that the new technology is effective in improving electrolyzer efficiency and current density, and is expected to reduce electrolyzer costs by 25%1.

Honeywell's green hydrogen projects are the culmination of Honeywell's decades of experience in the development and production of advanced membranes and catalysts for the gas processing, refining, steel and petrochemical industries, as well as recent experience developing novel membranes for battery and power applications.

Honeywell has been in the business of innovative solutions for hydrogen processing for more than 50 years. Since 1966, when pressure swing adsorption (PSA) technology was first used in industrial applications, the company has designed, produced and delivered more than 1,000 Honeywell UOP pressure swing adsorption systems for customers around the world, with a cumulative pure hydrogen production capacity of approximately 25 million standard cubic meters per hour.
