Honeywell upgrades auxiliary power units to reduce fuel consumption and CO2 emissions

Honeywell has announced the Efficient Mode (HEM) upgrade to the 131-9B auxiliary power unit (APU) for the Boeing 737 aircraft. The high-efficiency mode is made possible by an innovative and efficient diffuser and the corresponding software that automatically adjusts the air flow of the compressor.

Efficient mode saves fuel and increases efficiency, with the potential to reduce CO2 emissions by 1%-2% (0.5-0.6 gallons of fuel per hour is expected per APU) and extend APU flight time on the wing by up to 1,500 hours, reducing fuel and maintenance costs.

The auxiliary power unit is a critical component of the aircraft, providing electricity and air conditioning to ensure passenger comfort while the aircraft is on the ground, as well as air supply for pilots when they are ready to start the main engines. The 131-9B auxiliary power unit is known for its reliability and low maintenance costs throughout its lifecycle.

China's aviation industry is making unremitting efforts to reduce its carbon footprint, and Honeywell is committed to making its due contribution to this process. The new Efficiency Mode upgrade will improve fuel efficiency through technological innovation and help partners accelerate the low-carbon transition.

An airline with a fleet of 50 Boeing 737s, for example, could save up to $450,000 per year in fuel costs and reduce CO2 emissions by up to 1,100 tonnes (depending on operating conditions). Based on the actual operating results of a major airline, the 131-9A auxiliary power unit helped save 2.46% of fuel. In addition, the increase in on-wing flight time means fewer repairs, which in turn reduces maintenance costs, saving an average of $315,000 per service reduction.

This upgrade applies to all aircraft equipped with 131-9B auxiliary power units, including Boeing 737-600, 737-700, 737-800, 737-900 and 737 MAX aircraft. Starting in the second half of the year, fleet operators equipped with 131-9B auxiliary power units will gradually enjoy the benefits of the efficient mode. Efficient mode upgrades are available in any scheduled maintenance, and newer models (49 series and above) 131-9B auxiliary power units require no additional downtime to install new diffusers, enabling in-wing upgrades.

Launched in 2020 for the Airbus A320 family of aircraft, more than 700 131-9A auxiliary power units have been upgraded.

Honeywell's first auxiliary power unit was first commissioned in 1950. To date, Honeywell has produced more than 100,000 auxiliary power units. Currently, more than 36,000 APUs are installed on more than 150 fixed- and rotary-wing aircraft in the regional, business and commercial sectors.
