• Since 2004, Honeywell has reduced the greenhouse gas intensity of its operations and facilities by more than 90 percent
• Honeywell will continue to help customers achieve their sustainability goals by driving energy conservation and emissions reduction through product innovation and supporting the use of renewable energy
• Honeywell's commitment to carbon neutrality aligns with China's sustainability goals, and the company is committed to working with Chinese partners to create a healthier, safer, smarter, and more efficient sustainable future
SHANGHAI, China, April 9, 2021 – Honeywell (NYSE: HON) today announced its commitment to achieve carbon neutrality across all operations and facilities by 2035. The company will continue its commitment to sustainability through a package of initiatives that include increased investment in energy efficiency projects, the adoption of renewable energy, the completion of asset improvement projects for business facilities and the company's fleet, and the use of reliable carbon credits. Since 2004, the greenhouse gas intensity of the company's operations and facilities has been reduced by more than 90%.
"Creating a safer, more sustainable future for future generations is a responsibility for companies like Honeywell. That's why I'm pleased to commit to achieving carbon neutrality in our operations and facilities by 2035. "Honeywell has a long history of improving its own environmental and sustainability performance, as well as improving customer performance through innovative products and services. We will continue to invest in factories and new technologies to reduce our carbon footprint and make a positive contribution to the global cause of mitigating climate change. ”
Honeywell will continue to drive carbon reduction through rigorous, end-to-end business operations. Honeywell's emissions reductions will be publicly reported as required by the GHG Protocol and verified by a third party. The company's various measures to achieve carbon neutrality in its business operations and facilities include direct greenhouse gas emissions (Scope 1) and indirect emissions based on the use of electric heat or heat (Scope 2). In addition, Honeywell is committed to addressing other indirect emissions, including sources of emissions from the value chain, by enhancing existing tracking systems and partnering with industry leaders to identify and implement best practices, while encouraging customers to adopt Honeywell's climate solutions and products.
Honeywell's commitment to carbon neutrality is in line with China's sustainability goals of peaking carbon dioxide emissions before 2030 and achieving carbon neutrality before 2060. Honeywell has been implementing the strategy of "Oriental for Oriental" in China, strengthening product research and development and technological innovation in China, and is committed to working with Chinese partners to create a healthier, safer, smarter and more efficient sustainable future.
"China's carbon neutrality goal is a milestone event in the global response to climate change, and it also brings broader development opportunities for enterprises." "Honeywell has a unique technological advantage to serve the long-term goal of China's high-quality development by continuously developing products and technologies that meet the energy and environmental needs of Chinese customers, and to shape a sustainable future with Chinese partners," said Lin Shiwei, President of Honeywell China. ”
Honeywell has repeatedly set ambitious sustainability goals and exceeded them. In addition to significant reductions in greenhouse gas emissions, Honeywell has implemented more than 5,700 sustainability projects since 2010, saving an average of $100 million per year.
In 2019, Honeywell set three new "ten" goals: to reduce Scope 1 and Scope 2 greenhouse gas emissions by an additional 10% by 2024 from 2018 levels, deploy at least 10 renewable energy opportunities, and achieve ISO 50001 energy management system certification for 10 facilities. Now, Honeywell is delivering on those promises.
Honeywell's commitment to carbon neutrality builds on the company's decades of innovation in helping customers achieve their environmental and social goals. In fact, about 50 percent of Honeywell's new product development is geared toward improving the environmental and social performance of its customers.
Honeywell's Solstice ® family of low-GWP refrigerants, blowing agents, aerosols and solvents, which are widely used around the world, have helped reduce more than 200 million tons of carbon dioxide equivalent to today, equivalent to reducing the emissions of more than 42 million vehicles in an entire year. Honeywell also offers process technologies to produce biofuels, energy-saving performance contract services to improve the energy efficiency of buildings and campuses, and software that helps building owners save energy while improving occupant safety and comfort.
Honeywell will continue to invest in other cutting-edge sustainable technologies, including energy storage solutions, such as flow batteries that can store excess wind and solar energy. At the same time, the company is also investing in technologies to replace natural gas with hydrogen to support the decarbonization of residential, commercial and industrial energy.
