On the way to a new era of intuitive, fast, and highly functional comprehensive automation, KUKA will be unveiling the future operating system iiQKA.OS for the first time at the Hannover Industry Digital Expo. The operating system will form the foundation of an entire ecosystem, providing an entry point to various programs, applications, services, or accessories, and will be easy to install, operate, and scale. This is true for anyone who is new to the industry and anyone who wants to become, or has become an automation expert.

"Automation is one of the megatrends of our time. That's why KUKA's mission 2030 has set a policy of making robot-assisted automation easy for everyone. Dr. Kristina Wagner, Vice President of Corporate Research and Director of Robot X-perience, introduced. This is where the new operating system iiQKA.OS and the iiQKA ecosystem come into play: based on a modern, modular software structure, with intuitive functions that are integrated throughout the user journey and are easy to use – then facilitate the agile introduction of robotics skills for beginners and greatly improve automation for those who are proficient.

In order to ensure the ease of use of the entire robot system, it is necessary to pay more attention to software than ever before. To do this, the requirements have an operating system that is not only intuitive to operate, but also to visit an ecosystem of programs, applications, services and accessories – as is the case with the iiQKA.OS plan. The agile cobot LBR iisy will be the first robot of its kind to fully use the new operating system – complemented by the iiQKA ecosystem, combined with the KR C5 micro robot controller and smartPAD pro as an operating unit. Here, KUKA not only wants to help newcomers get to know the robot skills more easily, but also aims to expand the existing customer base. The long-term approach: In the future, every KUKA product will be equipped with the new operating system iiQKA.OS – a long-term project that has now completed its initial phase.

In the future, the iiQKA ecosystem will develop into a network of partners and developers who supply hardware and software – for example, a range of grippers, cameras for optical identification, security sensors, or application-specific programs. This is now the case with the first important partners of the iiQKA ecosystem – SCHUNK, SICK, and Roboception. Among them, it is important to provide partners and developers with open, standardized interfaces that allow them to provide software and hardware extensions in a simple way. Ultimately, customers and integrators will benefit from quick and easy access to the right combination of KUKA products and extensions for their applications. As a result, the functions and services provided by the ecosystem will make the KUKA product portfolio more flexible and efficient, allowing it to adapt to changing market requirements.

The entire architecture of the new operating system is based on the Linux kernel and is designed to be developed quickly and extremely easy to use: iiQKA.OS will be updated quickly, so more functions will be added over time. The new operating system will also support the original KUKA Robot Speech (KRL). From this, master KUKA. Existing customers with core knowledge of SystemSoftware will be able to transition to iiQKA.OS in the future and continue to leverage the workflow and code.
