Unlike Boston Dynamics' Spot, Kawasaki's robot, Ibex, is ready for human passengers.
We're still more or less in the early stages of robotics skills, and engineers are adding anything to the design and hoping to find a design that sticks (***). So, it seems to be a great explanation of why Kawasaki has created a four-legged robot goat capable of transporting goods or passengers, but only if neither is in a hurry.
At the 2022 International Robot Show (iREX) in Tokyo last week, Bex officially made its appearance. Bex is an offshoot of the Kaleido Kawasaki project, which has been working on the development of bipedal humanoid robots since 2015.
When looking at every video shared by Boston Dynamics about its multimillion-dollar Atlas robot skidding and falling, it became clear that developing a bipedal robot that relied on two legs like a real person to move with agility and stability was no easy feat. That's how Bex was born. Kawasaki's robotics engineers were looking for a balance between the agility of a bipedal robot, the ability to walk on uneven terrain, and the reliability of a wheeled robot, which avoids balance problems by keeping everything on the ground at all times.
With regard to those speed first, road planners are able to take advantage of the smooth paved exterior at the moment, the Bex robot is able to lower its body, kneel on four wheels on its knees, and turn it into some kind of electric scooter. But when the terrain begins to become uneven, Bex is able to stand and move with four highly articulated legs, with a gait that guarantees that at least half of the legs touch the ground at any given moment, which greatly reduces the balance moves it needs to perform.
The Bex has a cargo capacity of about 220 pounds (about 100 kilograms), so in addition to carrying heavy loads, it is also capable of carrying human passengers who use traditional handlebars to drive the quadruped. To achieve the limited appeal and functionality of designing the robot to resemble a wild goat, Kawasaki also designed the upper part of the Bex to be thoroughly modular. As a result, those who expect to be able to focus on delivering their goods will be able to ditch the animal theme altogether, while those who see an opportunity to modernize their ranches may use this robot to replace horseback riding altogether and bring cowboys into the 21st century once and for all.
