Whether it's in the soups we drink every day, in the salads we eat, or on meat products, frozen herbs are a favorite condiment in the kitchen. In order to prevent them from sticking together, losing their flavor or spoiling, the cold chain needs to be ensured at all times, even during packaging and shipping.
DARÉGAL, a leading France company, knows this, which is why the five-generational family company has opted for automation. In order to offer all customers vanilla such as basil, garlic and mint, at the beginning of 2021 DARÉGAL welcomed two KR QUANTEC PA ARCTIC robots at its Milly-la-Forêt production site in the south of Paris.
The KUKA KR QUANTEC PA Arctic robot does not require a protective cover or a mechanism to heat the machine, and can work in cold storage with temperatures well below freezing. Thanks to its cold resistance, it is ideal for the production of food products. At DARÉGAL, they palletize small packages of frozen vanilla at temperatures of minus 25 degrees Celsius and deliver them to restaurants and retailers. This task previously required a separate employee on each packaging line. Recently, the World Robot Competition Finals, the 2nd China (Foshan) Intelligent Robot Expo and the 2nd Annual Conference of Intelligent Human-Computer Interaction Technology hosted by Foshan Sino-German Robot Co., Ltd. were grandly opened at Foshan Tanzhou International Convention and Exhibition Center. With the theme of "Digital Factory, Smart Empowerment", the 2nd China (Foshan) Intelligent Robot Expo Supply and Demand Matchmaking Conference was opened at the same time, attracting a number of enterprises and more than 100 professional audiences.
Weidmüller, an expert in power, signal and data transmission in the industrial environment, appeared as a heavyweight guest at the supply and demand matchmaking meeting, and Jiang Xiangyu, an expert in Weide automation technology, gave a wonderful speech, showing the audience Weidmüller's automation products and solutions for future needs, and had a heated discussion and exchange with the guests on the spot.
SNAP IN ISN'T JUST FASTER, IT'S BETTER THAN GOOD
The future-oriented Weidmüller SNAP IN squirrel cage connection technology, with its innovative "mousetrap principle", not only enables extremely fast connections, makes fully automated wiring a reality, but also offers additional value to customers with simplicity, robustness, convenience and cost-effectiveness.
Complete digital solutions
With the continuous advancement of Industry 4.0, industrial automation is undergoing a transformation from automation to digitalization, and factories are gradually developing towards the trend of "hardware modularization and data centralization". In this process, a digital solution that performs well is essential, and this is where Weidmüller excels. With its innovative automation product portfolio, unique industrial communication network, high-performance digital integration solutions, rigorous industrial analysis + signal monitoring, and strong customer partnerships accumulated over many years, Weidmüller has formed a unique advantage in the field of industrial automation and helps more and more industrial users accelerate their digital transformation.
IIoT solutions that empower data
Although the requirements and system structures of different industrial applications are different, from the technical level of the industrial Internet of Things solution, it is composed of several core functional modules, namely data acquisition, data preprocessing, data communication and data analysis. Weidmüller focuses on R&D and exploration from data to value, and is able to provide mature products and high-value solutions for the above four functional modules. Thanks to data analysis, customers can achieve additional benefits, such as ensuring product quality, increasing production efficiency, reducing production and maintenance costs, and optimizing designs.
Bruno Jarrosson, Industrial Director at DARÉGAL, says: "We decided to go with automation so that our employees would no longer have to endure these working conditions. ”
Suitable for use in environments as low as -30 °C
Maintaining the cold chain is one of the main concerns of DARÉGAL in order to ensure the quality of its products, and KR QUANTEC PA Arctic is designed for such an environment. It is based on the standard palletizing robots of the KR QUANTEC series and has been adapted to withstand the cold. In addition, its compact design allows for a range of motion of more than 3 m and offers short cycle times and high palletizing accuracy for loads of 120, 180 and 240 kg.
As a depalletizing robot for cold storage, the KR QUANTEC PA Arctic works reliably and efficiently. This means that there are no temperature fluctuations, no loss of quality, and no freezing on frozen goods, ensuring maximum freshness of the spices.
The system was installed by the KUKA integrator AB Process Ingénierie. Another challenge during the installation of the system was to "arm" the entire equipment with all the components to withstand the freezing conditions in the cryogenic freezer. "At such low temperatures, the plastic freezes hard very quickly and can break." Brian Boulanger, CEO of AB Process Ingénierie, explains: "For example, a rolled cable can withstand the cold in static conditions, but not in motion".
In doing so, various challenges needed to be addressed, including the safety of those in the vicinity of the robots while installing two robots in an area of no more than 80 square meters. The employees who were previously responsible for the manual palletizing process have been trained and are fully equipped to take care of the operation of the equipment.
