The safety radar system PSENradar is a safe area protection monitoring device based on FMCW radar technology launched by Pilz, which is different from traditional area protection monitoring sensors, PSENradar is not easily affected by the external environment and is suitable for safe area protection monitoring under harsh conditions.
Not afraid of "harsh environments"
The radar technology used in PSENradar ensures high availability, even in applications that affect the external environment, such as dust, dirt, rain, light, sparks or vibrations. Operating in the frequency band of 24 - 24.25 GHz, it can achieve SIL 2 (IEC 61508), PL d (EN ISO 13849-1) and Type 3 requirements, which already meets the requirements of typical robotic applications.
PSENradar has additional interfaces such as Ethernet and Profisafe, which makes safety radar sensors easy to use in retrofit applications. The selection and configuration of the sensors can be carried out via the corresponding configurator, which facilitates quick commissioning. Depending on the application, the solution for safety radar sensors can consist of up to six radar sensors, a control unit and the configurable safety small controller PNOZmulti 2. The user can define the appropriate protection area for each sensor and set the size of the monitoring area as required, which of course is directly related to the position of the sensor, the installation height and the inclination. In order to keep the productivity of the production equipment at a high level at all times, in addition to the protective area, the warning area can also be configured, and when someone intrudes into the warning area, a warning is issued by means of a photoelectric signal to remind personnel to exit the danger zone. In this way, it will not affect the normal production of the equipment.
Application examples for the food processing industry
Today, we would like to present an example of how the features of PSENradar have been applied to the food processing industry, where a ham and sausage processing plant has applied PSENradar to the RGV of the material transported in its meat mixing plant.
On the one hand, because the RGV is too close to the worker's operating area, PSENradar can effectively prevent people from intruding into the danger zone and the risk of being impacted, and on the other hand, due to the high humidity of the water vapor environment in the workshop, the IP67 waterproof rating of PSENradar can be independent of the water vapor environment in the workshop.
The protection range of PSENradar can reach up to 4m, and the scanning angle is 110°, so that the RGV trolley has enough time to make emergency braking in case of special situations, and the two sets of safety relay outputs of the radar controller cut off the servo STO of the trolley to prevent personnel from being injured in the collision. Each RGV trolley on site is equipped with two radar sensors on the left and right, and the four sensors are finally connected to the radar special controller in series connection (one controller can be connected to up to 6 sensors) to meet the protection needs of a single device from multiple angles.
The radar controller has a built-in shielding function, which can shield the two sensors on the right side in certain situations, such as when the trolley moves to the left, to prevent the person from entering from the right side from the wrong side. In addition, since the high-pressure water cannon for the RGV trolley is washed at regular intervals, a plastic housing is installed on the outside of each radar sensor for electrical safety reasons, in which case the sensor can still operate normally without affecting its sensitivity.
