Choose the right filler metal
What is a base metal and what is the quality?
We work with different metals because they have different properties and generally don't work well together. Apply filler metals that match your base metal. Although it happens more often in repairs than in new production, another possibility is the quality of the base metal. If it has many contaminants or similar problems, you may want to look at a filler metal that contains oxygen absorber to force contaminants into the weld surface rather than weakening the entire weld.
What do you need to match?
This will depend on the strength of the metal you are soldering, but you should always look for fillers that are as strong as the surrounding material or slightly stronger.
What kind of equipment are you using?
If your equipment doesn't have enough current to consider the wire you're considering, you'll need to find a wire with a smaller diameter (which slows down the line) or buy a machine with a higher operating current.
In what position are you welding?
The filler metal used for horizontal welds is generally the most consolidated and has the lowest porosity. However, if your plan requires you to weld in different orientations, make sure to use a filler metal that meets the needs of that orientation.
Do you need to meet planning or regulatory requirements?
Another way to solve this problem is to ask in which environment will the weld be exposed? If the weld is subject to oscillation or stress, make sure your filler metal is satisfied. If it is exposed to water, pressure or high temperatures, these factors also need to be taken into account.
What maintenance gas is required?
If you use pure carbon dioxide to maintain the weld, it will make the weld deeper, but it will generally add the value of spatter. If you are adding argon to the mixture, more filler metal may be transferred to the weld, resulting in a consistent weld quality with less spatter.
Do I need heat treatment before or after welding?
Many welders know that when working with thicker metals and certain types of steel, the metal should be preheated for optimal weld action to avoid weld shortening and perhaps cracking when the weld is shortened. However, some materials also require heat to slow down the cooling process. If your project requires these types of metals, make sure your filler metal can work for extended cooling times.
