Wood Group's hydrogen production technology, combined with Honeywell's UOP EcofiningTM process and carbon capture and storage technology, can reduce lifecycle greenhouse gas emissions by 100% compared to fossil fuels
The large-scale rollout of Honeywell and Wood Group's skills is expected to reduce emissions by more than 34 million tons of CO2e per year by 2030
DES PRANS, Illinois, United States, October 8, 2021 – Honeywell (NASDAQ: HON) and Wood Group (LSE: WG) recently announced the launch of a comprehensive skills package for carbon-neutral aviation fuel. Centered on Honeywell's UOP EcofiningTM process skills and Wood Group's hydrogen production skills, these complementary skills process specific biomass feedstocks into renewable aviation fuel, reducing lifecycle greenhouse gas emissions by 100% compared to traditional fossil aviation fuels.
The UOP EcofiningTM process converts gutter oil, fats and greases into Honeywell Green Aviation FuelTM, a direct replacement for petroleum jet fuel. Compared to conventional fuels, the use of waste oil as a material can reduce life-cycle greenhouse gas emissions by 80%.
Wood Group skills will further convert by-products of the UOP EcofiningTM process into renewable hydrogen. This will result in a further 10% reduction in total life-cycle greenhouse gas emissions compared to conventional fuels. The renewable hydrogen is then processed again by the EcofiningTM process to remove impurities, resulting in a cleaner renewable fuel.
The carbon dioxide generated during hydrogen production can be captured by Honeywell's Hydrogen Solutions Skills Kit and permanently stored underground. Compared with traditional petroleum aviation fuel, this will again reduce life cycle greenhouse gas emissions by 10%, and finally effectively complete the carbon neutrality of aviation fuel production through the integration of skills.

Recently, United States federal government agencies such as the United States Department of Power, the Department of Transportation, and the Department of Agriculture jointly launched a plan to increase annual production of sustainable aviation fuel in the United States to 11.3 billion liters (3 billion gallons) by 2030. If all of Honeywell's skills package were used, it is estimated that more than 34 million tons of CO2 will be saved annually, depending on the combination of oils and fats used.
In 2016, California World Dynamics was the first to introduce the UOP EcofiningTM process for the commercial production of sustainable aviation fuel. To this day, it remains the only 100% renewable aviation fuel plant in the world. Today, EcofiningTM skills are used in most renewable diesel production facilities with 100% biomass feed, as well as all authorized renewable aviation fuel production worldwide. Today, Honeywell UOP has licensed 22 EcofiningTM process equipment in 9 countries around the world to process 12 different types of renewable materials.
