In recent years, robotization has become an important development in the global greenhouse industry. When taking into account expertise such as machine learning, big data and quantum computing, the advantages of using this knowledge in the field of horticultural technology are remarkable.
Mapping the future of greenhouse robots
Thanks to the recent investment by Japan auto parts giant DENSO, Certhon is well positioned to play an important role in this development. 90% of the world's cars are equipped with DENSO parts, so the Japan company is no stranger to high technology.
Both Certhon and DENSO have a long-term approach and both aspire to be the best in horticulture. That's why Certhon and DENSO have established a joint venture, DENSO AgriTech Soulutions (DENSO AgriTech Solutions), in Asia, and are now using robots in a 4-hectare greenhouse in Japan.
Robots vs. growers
The development of the robot is being carried out in parallel with the development of Certhon's "black box systems", and both of them are closely related to the autonomous food system of the future. But overall, the idea is not to replace growers entirely. We want to give growers something more advantageous to achieve a greater range of control.
At present, horticultural robots are still in the initial stage of development. Let's start with tomatoes, which are a commonly cultivated crop and there are many growers who can invest in them. After that, robotization will also extend to bell peppers and cucumbers, the latter of which is a crop that requires a particularly dense labor force.
Future plans
As mentioned earlier, the first harvesting robot is now in use, but it is not yet available for sale on the market. After testing it in Japan, some Netherlands growers will also test it and gradually advance it to the next stage.
Our long-term approach is to make robots and plants an integral part of planting, just like looking at the growth of crops or any signs of disease. In this way, the output value of the growth system fed by the sensor information can also be manipulated and even adjusted according to market demand.
Smart Gardening Asia Webinar
Certhon and DENSO took part in a webinar on robotics in the horticultural industry on Thursday 19 November, organized by Smart Horticulture (ASIA FRUIT LOGISTICA).
In the workshop, Edwin Vanlaerhoven and Haruhiko Kato from DENSO discussed the successful implementation of robotics in the next generation of growth systems.

How to select the diameter of the welding wire of the DENSO robot
The main consideration in selecting the diameter of the wire is the thickness of the material to be welded. If the wire is selected that is too small for the data, the welding process is underpowered, and time and production costs are wasted, as the welder has to spend more time completing the weld. Because the weld may not be fully permeable ...
