The Guangzhou-based injection molding plant has 250 employees, 40 injection molding machines, and an annual output value of about 50 million yuan. The robotic arm market was well researched before the plant introduced cobots for machine loading and material removal applications. At first, they thought that traditional industrial robots would be sufficient for automation, with a robotic arm picking up and placing plastic parts from the machine and placing them under the stamping equipment to remove the material, and then unloading them into the packaging bags of the textile plastic parts to complete the whole process. Therefore, in terms of explicit cost, cobots are not their first choice.

In addition, the user argues that the factory currently has sufficient working space, so whether or not additional safety fencing is installed on the equipment and robots does not constitute an impact on the project. However, in the subsequent communication, the business personnel and the user engineers found a phenomenon, the production tasks of the factory are intensive, and the customer's customized needs are affected, and the batch of injection molded products is large. When calculating the actual production efficiency for the whole year, it was found that the downtime caused by the reprogramming and commissioning of the robot due to the change of varieties could account for up to 30% of the effective working time. If the programming and commissioning time of the robot can be shortened, the operating costs will be reduced in terms of system efficiency. From this point of view, cobots provide users with another option.
03 Solution
The end customer decided to try cobots for the sake of long-term interests. In this application, one robot corresponds to two devices - the injection molding machine completes the processing and demolding of plastic parts, and the Elite 6kg collaborative robot EC66 takes out the two plastic parts by probing into the injection molding machine through the slide rail and puts them into the stamping robot. After the press does not finish punching a plastic part, it is picked up by the robotic arm, and both parts are taken out and put into the unloading box together. After programming with the cobot's visual instructions, the program setup time was reduced from 1-2 days to several hours.
Cobots can be used in all areas of plastic products and polymer production, including: gate removal, PCB loading and unloading, pick and place projects. Due to the different processing and temperature ranges required for different materials, the production of plastic products and polymers requires a high degree of flexibility. The use of cobots not only increases productivity, but also improves safety by reducing employee exposure to harmful gases released during plastic and polymer production, as well as protecting employees in the production line from the hazards posed by plastic shavings and handling sharp objects.
