In a nutshell
In traditional factories, employees on the production line are often required to perform heavy manual labor. A Tier 1 manufacturer in an automotive factory in Europe chose ELITE Robot to liberate them. The Elite EC66 (6kg) cobot is deployed at an assembly station to work alongside an operator. Each robot performs approximately 5,800 screw tightening actions in 16 hours of work per day. Customers are satisfied with the stability and safety of our products and the punctual service.
The European-based factory had previously used some international brands of cobots for parts assembly and handling, with the goal of freeing employees from heavy manual labor. After a pilot in the factory, it was determined that a lightweight and flexible cobot could help the factory achieve flexible automation.
01 Background
The "Flexible Manufacturing" initiative, initiated by the automation department, plays a key role in lean manufacturing. Founded in 1990, the plant now employs more than 1,000 people and has become a leading brand in the automotive industry. In order to further consolidate the development, the customer established the Automation Division in 2006 to provide customers with a wide range of automotive parts, including a variety of standard and customized products, from body structure to component assembly. The project team quickly discovered that cobots could spark a wealth of new ideas in developing modern assembly concepts. Cobots can work alongside employees, which opens a new door to automated production.
02 pain points
The team of engineers is no stranger to this technology, as they use two types of cobots from international brands. In 2020, the factory considered introducing more cobots for part assembly. The robotic arm uses an end-of-arm screwgun to screw the screws into the brackets, each of which locks two screws. The screwgun provides 7.5Nm of torque and tightens the task in less than 16 seconds.
The work was initially done by hand. The manufacturing engineer explains, "Employees on the production line often have to do heavy manual tasks, but cobots can free them up. In the past, they had to overcome a strong reaction force when tightening, and a stressful day's work would leave them with sore hands and sore shoulders. Now we're trying to use cobots to assist operators.
In two shifts, the cobot can process up to 180 products per hour. When the production process is optimized, the cobot can even recognize the type of part to be processed and always follow the appropriate procedure. Each robot performs approximately 5,800 screw tightening actions in 16 hours of work per day. These simple and tedious tasks are now all done by robots, which greatly reduces the labor load and improves production consistency.
The benefits of deploying cobots are obvious to automakers, but the goals of the automation sector are even more ambitious. They aim to replicate this application with a higher ROI and improve overall operational efficiency.
03 Solution
For automation engineers with 5 or 6 years of experience, they have their sights set on Chinese cobot brands. With the advancement of globalization and cross-border cooperation, international manufacturers pay more attention to the product stability and service timeliness of Chinese collaborative robot companies such as ELITE Robot.
With the joint efforts of European automakers and integrators, they evaluated numerous domestic brands and finally extended an olive branch to ELITE Robot. The Elite EC66 (6kg) cobot is deployed at an assembly station to work alongside an operator. The brackets and pads are first assembled by the operator, and then the screws are pre-positioned to the position to be tightened and fed into the cobot tightening station. Once the robot detects that the workpiece is in place, it locks the screws. Once assembled, the workpiece will be removed by the operator and transferred to the next process for assembly. The operator feeds the unmachined workpiece into the table again.
In addition to features such as ease of programming, it can be quickly integrated with (end effector) screwguns. Users are particularly interested in the safety of cobots – the need for human-robot collaboration and frequent interaction is fully integrated in this application. Especially as a Tier 1 manufacturer in an automotive plant, the customer has strict safety regulations in place. Judging from the selection of elites, we can infer that Chinese brands may have great opportunities to go overseas.
