01 Background
As early as the end of 2016, an auto parts factory in Zhejiang Province began considering using robots to replace manual loading and unloading of machine tools. At that time, the factory used manual removal of metal parts from the tray and put them into the machine tool for processing, and after the processing was completed, the materials were removed and put into new materials. In the whole workflow, the part of the movement that the worker completes is fairly simple, only need to switch between the tray and the machine and complete the loading and unloading work. From the point of view of the complete production line layout, this station is undoubtedly low value-added, so the factory wants to be able to automate it here.
02 pain points
Once the idea of "replacing people with robots" was proposed, it was supported by the engineering department, because at present, manual operation not only has a certain risk factor - when human hands enter the machine tool equipment, it is necessary to ensure the safety of employees working with their bare hands through foolproof design. In addition, from an ergonomic point of view, workers need to turn around frequently in trays and machine tools to complete mechanical work, so it is easy to cause emotional labor and cause inefficiency. Factories are realizing that it is becoming increasingly difficult to find people willing to do this type of work that does not require "smart". The introduction of robots can solve the above problems, but with it comes how to place robots in a limited space. The project would have been complicated by the fact that the existing workstation could only accommodate one worker, and if the work had been done with a conventional robot, the production line had to be re-arranged. And after the robot is deployed, it is necessary to install a safety fence outside this work island.
03 Solution
At an exhibition, the head of the plant noticed the new technology of collaborative robots and found Elite through an integrator. The collaborative robotic arm can improve the quantity and quality of output from manufacturers in the metal and machining industry with an accuracy of +/-0.03mm, and the robot can quickly adapt to a variety of machining processes with open interfaces. The robot supports multi-angle installation, including formal installation, hoisting, and side installation, with a compact structure and only needs to occupy 1-1.5 workstations. There is no need to redeploy production lines or install safety fences when the plant is in use. In the end, the auto parts manufacturer chose the Elite 6kg collaborative robot EC66 and completed the introduction of the robot in early 2017. So far, there have been no failures. It is expected that more workstations will appear in the future.
