The Business, Energy and Industrial Strategy Committee heard testimony from a number of United Kingdom manufacturing experts, including Tom Bouchier, managing director of FANUC United Kingdom, who argued that there was a high risk of falling behind other European countries due to a lack of automation.
Speaking in Parliament, Tom explained that the United Kingdom has been slow to adopt automation in manufacturing compared to other European countries.
Fanuc said that despite the growing demand for automation in the United Kingdom, the slow adoption has led to a decline in the level of industrial robots across the manufacturing industry.
Outlining the size of this gap, Tom commented: "The United Kingdom is the only G7 country with a lower density of robots than the world average – just 74 robots per 10,000 workers. This puts United Kingdom behind 14 other European countries, while Germany has a population density of 309 people, making it the most automated country on the continent. ”
"It's no longer a question of whether businesses can afford a greater degree of automation, it's a question of whether they can afford it. If our hourly productivity is 30% lower than that of Germany workers, then we cannot remain competitive. We can't put the genie back in the bottle, we have to automate it to keep up with the competition. ”
Bouchier cites a recent report from the International Federation of Robotics (IFR) which discusses the extent of the lack of industrial robots in the United Kingdom.
He added that the negative attitude towards automation could be a factor in the slow adoption in the United Kingdom, which is something that the United Kingdom manufacturing industry needs to address to improve its capabilities.
