IO-Link is an open sensor communication protocol that represents a powerful and standardized (IEC 61131-9) connection technology in the field of point-to-point communication and is fieldbus and system independent. The communication protocol will also be used for functionally safe data exchange in the near future.

The advantages of IO-Link are the simplification of installation (e.g. the use of standardized cables and the elimination of parallel wiring), the automatic configuration tool and additional diagnostic options.
Pilz: The first products with IO-Link Safety will soon be available on the market
In order to be able to use IO-Link for safety-related automation tasks, Pilz and other partners in the IO-Link Community have been working on the development, testing, and certification of the corresponding technologies over the past few years.

At the SPS exhibition in Nuremberg, Germany, at the end of 2022, IO-Link Safety was demonstrated for the first time by multiple vendors, and users were shown a variety of functions and capabilities of IO-Link Safety at the exhibition site.

  It's not just about safety

IO-Link has been particularly successful in demonstrating the hybrid communication mode in which safety-relevant and standard-relevant data can be exchanged simultaneously via the same IO-Link device, which makes IO-Link Safety extremely powerful and why it is used for safe drives, safety gate locking and control, and signaling devices. This means that non-safety-related functions can be programmed as usual, while only safety functions are controlled and monitored via the PLC's fail-safe program.

The response to the technology at SPS was very positive and the demonstration enabled users to better understand issues such as the independence of the bus system and the integrity of the system, including test equipment.
Pilz: The first products with IO-Link Safety will soon be available on the market
At the Hannover Messe 2023 in Germany, the IO-Link Community has further expanded the display area of IO-Link Safety, and at the same time, it has completed some of the necessary testing and safety certification procedures for the launch of new technologies through the relevant Notified Bodies, and IO-Link Safety can already be applied to practical safety products.

As a well-known brand of automation technology, Pilz has been involved in the development of IO-Link Safety throughout the entire process, and the first products with IO-Link Safety will soon be launched on the market.
