In 2020, with its innovative ctrlX AUTOMATION automation system platform, the market paradigm of Bosch Rexroth began to shift in accordance with the principle of "smartphones in the world of industrial automation". In 2021, Bosch Rexroth made the leap from an open platform to a network of industrial partners with ctrlX World. Now, Bosch Rexroth has taken another big step on the road to freedom and openness: In the past, the Linux-based real-time operating system was only suitable for the control system ctrlX CORE, but now it is a stand-alone solution for industrial environments. ctrlX OS can be used at all tiers, from the field to the cloud, and on a variety of different hardware.

Automation takes freedom to the next level
Bosch Rexroth has made a new step forward in research and development: the launch of ctrlX OS, a Linux-based operating system designed for real-time applications in industrial environments. The ctrlX OS is hardware agnostic and can seamlessly connect more automation components to the entire ctrlX AUTOMATION portfolio, including ctrlX World's partner solutions. It makes it easier and more flexible to develop, install, update, and operate software-based functionality at all levels of the automation topology. As a result, Bosch Rexroth can meet the needs of software-driven factories and enable modern software operations such as virtual testing and automated DevOps. Due to the independence of the hardware, it can be operated in a hypervisor platform, in a data center, on an edge server, or in the cloud.
The operating system supports application technology, web-based engineering, secure user management, and high-performance data exchange via the ctrlX data layer. All devices in the network can be efficiently connected through the system. Standardized toolchains and software development kits (SDKs) are available for all devices. ctrlX Device Portal allows users to perform effective device management from anywhere in the world. This is a digital service that can be used to provide new software features, management and maintenance of equipment, or remote maintenance.
The adoption of ctrlX OS means that all layers can be automated. This makes it easy to integrate IT and OT applications into Industry 4.0. ctrlX OS provides access to all applications through the ctrlX Store and ctrlX AUTOMATION communities.
