Bosch Rexroth and WAGO are working together to develop new industry solutions
The Bosch Rexroth operating system ctrlX OS caused a stir in the market as soon as it was launched: the automation specialist made the software independent of the control hardware and used the software in an industrial environment. As a result, even competitors can use Linux-based operating systems for relevant purposes and act as system and technology partners. WAGO has decided to continue on this path and is helping to drive the open development of automation as the first partner of Bosch Rexroth in this field.

ctrlX OS is a system designed for real-time applications and can be used at all levels – from the field level and edge devices to the cloud level. With its new openness, it removes all previous boundaries and creates a new space for users to move. After installing ctrlX OS, the entire ecosystem can be accessed. The required app is also available for download on the ctrlX store.
Previously, this operating system was dedicated to ctrlX CORE, the control system of the automation toolkit ctrlX AUTOMATION. Today, Bosch Rexroth is expanding its openness as a stand-alone solution for industrial purposes, which will create even more diverse opportunities for cooperation in the market.
The potential is limitless – automation with an operating system
As a company specializing in automation and connectivity technology, WAGO is the first system and technology partner to implement the Bosch Rexroth operating system. By participating in ctrlX World together, Bosch Rexroth and WAGO have been working together on an ongoing basis. WAGO offers its partners specific modules with its own I/O portfolio and will also be involved in the further development of the operating system ctrlX OS. The initial focus was on the implementation of the project with its own devices and the development of WAGO-specific applications based on the ctrlX OS.
Johannes Pfeffer, Vice President of WAGO's Automation Division, said: "At the heart of WAGO's product strategy is the application of ctrlX OS on the self-developed WAGO control platform. With this new technology, we can increase the competitiveness of our products and at the same time, we can leverage our industry expertise to develop market-specific solutions. In order to successfully achieve this, we can also integrate products and devices from the Bosch Rexroth portfolio with our own product range."
WAGO already offers a complete and proven automation system. The system consists of a wide range of conventional controllers, couplers for fieldbus and network protocols, and a large number of I/O modules to meet the needs of almost all envisaged automation tasks. Johannes Pfeffer explains: "We will continue to provide this control platform for a long time", adding: "In order to improve performance in areas where medium and high performance are required, we will rely on the ctrlX OS system for a long time period – i.e., where large amounts of data need to be processed with high time accuracy and high IT security standards." ”
Automation infrastructure for smart factories
Bosch Rexroth and WAGO have joined forces to simplify automation and, for example, develop industry-specific applications that can be quickly accessed and used.
Steffen Winkler, Vice President Sales at Bosch Rexroth Automation & Electrification Solutions, explains: "WAGO is automating its industrial applications with increasing demands on performance and real-time capabilities. They also require greater IT security, a wider range of availability, easy scalability through software, and greater versatility when integrating sensors, protocols, and standards with automation hierarchies. With ctrlX OS, all of these goals can be achieved in a short period of time. ”
In addition, ctrlX OS provides connectivity to existing WAGO-exclusive stores, cloud-based device management options, and all access to the partner network ctrlX World.
Bosch Rexroth and WAGO share the goal of creating an open automation platform for software-driven smart factories. Steffen Winkler said: "That sounds ambitious. Considering the decentralized and proprietary nature of the industry, this is a very relevant task from the point of view of customer benefits. In concrete terms, this means that the platform is available to a wide range of user bases.
