Industrial robot is a kind of multi-functional, multi-free mechatronics active mechanical equipment and system that can complete certain operational tasks in the production process through repeated programming and active control, and it can form a single or multi-machine automation system in combination with the production host or production line, and complete a variety of production operations such as handling, welding, sorting, assembly and spraying without human participation. The industrial robots used in these production operations are first and foremost six-axis robots and four-axis robots.

So, what is the difference between a six-axis robot and a four-axis robot?

The main difference between a four-axis robot and a six-axis robot is that the four-axis robot is specially planned for high-speed pick-and-place operations, while the six-axis robot provides higher flexibility in production movement.

Four-axis robot

The first two joints of the four-axis robot are able to rotate freely left and right in the horizontal plane. The third joint consists of a metal rod called a quill and a gripper. The metal rod is capable of moving up and down in a straight plane or rotating around its straight axis, but not skewed. This common planning gives four-axis robots a high degree of rigidity, allowing them to perform high-speed and repetitive jobs. In packaging applications, four-axis robots excel at high-speed pick-and-place and other data handling tasks.

Six-axis robot

Six-axis robots have two more joints than four-axis robots, so they have more "freedom of movement". The first joint of the six-axis robot can rotate freely in the horizontal plane like a four-axis robot, and the last two joints can move in a straight plane. In addition, the six-axis robot has one "arm" and two "wrist" joints, which gives it similar abilities to a human arm and wrist. The six-axis robots have more joints means they can pick up parts in any orientation on the horizontal plane and place them into the packaged product at a special angle. They are also able to perform many operations that are performed by skilled workers.
