Eaton Announces New Power Management Solution

Eaton, a global power management company, today announced the launch of new power management solutions to support the green energy transition in the Asia Pacific (APAC) region. This includes an EV Charging Infrastructure (EVCI) solution suite, as well as the xStorage family of battery energy storage systems (BESS) designed for the unique commercial and operational environment in the Asia-Pacific region

As the economy electrifies and new opportunities arise for businesses and consumers to produce their own energy and feed it back to the grid, more energy will flow to the grid and more equipment than ever before.

As part of its broader energy transition mission, Eaton has also entered into a new partnership with the Singapore Sustainable Tropical Data Centre Pilot Bed (STDCT) to drive the development of innovative and sustainable solutions for tropical data centres.

Through these solutions, and through continued collaboration with the wider industry, we hope to enable more organisations in the Asia Pacific region to participate in the energy transition through them," added Jimmy.

Through Eaton's "everything connected" approach to the energy transition, different stakeholders are able to play a role in generation, balancing, storage and distribution, which has historically been done by utilities. These include residential, commercial, and industrial (C&I) properties such as data centers, factories, and electric vehicle (EV) transportation operators.

Helping construction and EV operators meet the growing demand for clean energy vehicles

EV ownership has become more common in recent years, driven by well-established sustainability policies and government incentives. Policymakers around the world recognize the importance of building a reliable and accessible EV charging infrastructure to support the growing adoption of EVs.

In Asia and the Pacific, countries have strengthened their carbon commitments by implementing sustainable transport policies. Malaysia announced incentives to support the local EV sector in its 2022 budget, including tax breaks for the installation and leasing of EV charging facilities. Elsewhere in the region, the Singapore government has proposed a law requiring the development of new buildings with parking lots and providing sufficient facilities to support EV charging points with 15% of total parking spaces.

To help building owners and developers prepare for new regulations and future demands, Eaton has launched a comprehensive suite of EVCI power management and digital management solutions in the Asia Pacific region. Building on existing technology and insights from Eaton's experience in Europe and the United States, and tailored to meet the unique needs and opportunities of the Asia Pacific region, this latest EVCI solution helps build seamless and flexible EV infrastructure for managers and EV fleet operators. Examples include:

AC (alternating current), DC (direct current) and prefabricated EV charging station solutions

Cloud-based EV charging software helps charging operators optimize costs, manage revenue, and have complete control over the entire charging network

When combined with renewable energy generation systems, this allows buildings to dramatically reduce EVCI's power supply costs, unlocking opportunities to create additional revenue streams from EVCI.

A key component of renewable energy generation systems is battery energy storage systems (BESS). BESS can store and release energy on demand, helping to manage the complexity of more complex power networks, such as bidirectional power flow and variable renewable energy.

Transform the building into an energy hub

In addition to EV charging applications, businesses, especially large electricity consumers such as manufacturing, commercial, and industrial facilities, are embracing on-site renewable energy to reduce their carbon footprint. However, concerns about cost may remain. BESS allows users to solve this problem by optimizing energy costs by peaking and participating in demand response programs such as Singapore. This helps organizations make a stronger business case to stakeholders when considering on-site renewable energy generation and EV charging capabilities.

Other key considerations include ease of installation, reliability, and efficient bidirectional power conversion capability. Leveraging Eaton's operational excellence in power management technology, Eaton's xStorage family of BESS solutions are designed to support an organization's energy transition and ensure power quality and resiliency. It also has a scalable, modular design that is easy to install and can be quickly deployed in the field. This allows companies to participate in the energy transition more seamlessly.

The launch of Eaton's EVCI and xStorage BESS solutions is the result of Eaton's investment in low-carbon R&D for the data center industry. In June this year, Eaton joined the STDCT project in Singapore as a consortium member.

Launched in 2021, STDCT is the world's first data center testbed in the tropics. Through this project, researchers from the National University of Singapore (NUS) and Nanyang Technological University in Singapore aim to develop innovative and sustainable cooling solutions for data centers operating in hot and humid environments.

As part of the partnership, Eaton will provide STDCT with data center power management solutions, such as UPS, lithium-ion batteries and busway systems, for approximately S$300,000. These solutions are designed to operate in a tropical environment without additional cooling intervention and will be used to support the backup power supply of STDCT experimental laboratories.

Our goal is to achieve commercially viable innovative cooling technologies and enable a greener, digital future. Collaboration is critical to STDCT's success, and we are thrilled to have Eaton on board." ”
