Eaton--- the intelligent power management company Czech Republic Prague and Roztoki today announced its participation in a pan-European research and innovation project to support the integrated technologies and business models needed to support the large-scale deployment of EV charging infrastructure
The €9.87 million (US$10.41 million) project, which will run for four years until March 2026 and covers the entire EV charging value chain, is supported by the EU's Horizon Europe research and innovation program, and will be led by the Fundació Institut de Recerca en Energia de Catalunya, a consortium of 24 external partners and six leading European universities
Eaton's role in the consortium will involve further developing EV charging technology, as well as demonstrating EV charging solutions, based on its building-as-grid experience, to combine the power needs of buildings and EVs with on-site renewable energy generation
The research and innovation focus will extend to vehicle-to-grid (V2G) and vehicle-to-everything (V2X) capabilities for greater system flexibility; DC-DC charging (DC to DC) while generating power quality and control benefits; and further work on Eaton's proprietary buildings as grid-based energy management systems that support forecasting, optimization and other essential services. To combine the various technologies into a complete solution, Eaton's multiple business units will collaborate on the project, including the pan-European Eaton Research Labs team and the Eaton Intelligent Power Center in Dublin, Ireland
Stefan Costea, Regional Technology Manager, Eaton Research Labs, said: "As electric vehicles grow in popularity in Europe, there is an urgent need for comprehensive Totally Integrated Charging technology to support large-scale deployments and enable valuable new services. As a key partner in the FLOW project, we are pleased to be able to develop the best solutions for EV charging, V2G, V2X and energy management. We will be showcasing these technologies in three test labs – Eaton European Innovation Centre Prague, University College Dublin and the Catalan Energy Institute of Barcelona. In addition, we will support large-scale technology demonstrations in Rome and Copenhagen with our energy management system. ”
For demonstrations in Prague and Barcelona, Eaton will work closely with Heliox, a market leader in fast-charging solutions. University College Dublin and nearby Maynooth University will collaborate with Eaton in Ireland, while RWTH Aachen University in Germany will collaborate with Eaton in Prague to conduct a techno-economic analysis of EV charging infrastructure use cases. In Rome and Copenhagen, Eaton will work with renowned transmission and distribution companies ENEL, Terna and Areti, as well as partners from Ricerca Sul Sistema Energetico and the Technical University of Denmark on the interoperability of energy management systems
