Shanghai, China, Feb. 24, 2021 – Honeywell (NYSE: HON) has launched a new smaller version of its popular aircraft cabin UV treatment system. The new product includes a UV lamp and a portable backpack to help users quickly and cost-effectively reduce pathogens on high-touch surfaces for a wide range of vehicles, from buses, trains, cars to small planes.
"Last June, Honeywell introduced an aircraft cabin UV treatment system that allows operators to push the product in the aisle of the cabin. We quickly realized that our customers needed a more portable device that would be better suited for use in smaller spaces, so we stepped up the development of Honeywell UV treatment packages. Brian Wenig, vice president of mechanical systems and components at Honeywell Aerospace, said, "The new products also feature proven UVC technology to reduce viruses and bacteria in a wide range of vehicles, including small aircraft, trains and buses. ”
The Honeywell UV Treatment Package includes a hand-held lamp approximately 12 inches (approximately 30 cm) long that emits UVC light. With a total weight of approximately 15 pounds (approximately 6.8 kilograms), the system is suitable for a variety of spaces that can accommodate people, including vehicles, buildings, and other shared spaces. The backpack part of the product slides on the ground like a small suitcase, and the built-in battery2. From no battery to full charge in 5 hours. The portable option in the new product also includes a UVC lamp that costs only 10 cents (about 6 dimes) per use.
Honeywell UV treatment packages can irradiate the surface of the target object at different heights and speeds depending on the operating environment and needs. Under the ideal dosage and speed conditions, the hand-held UV lamp can cover about 1 square meter of the surface area of the object in 17 seconds, and the distance of the work is about 3.5 meters per minute. The equipment can treat high-touch surfaces in the cabin, cockpit and toilet of medium-sized business jets in 15 minutes, and the interior surfaces of ordinary taxis in 5 minutes.
Unlike chemical cleaning solutions, UV light does not leave chemical residues on surfaces, nor does it require storage and frequent chemical refills. Studies have found that the correct use of UV light can reduce or inactivate a wide range of viruses and bacteria, including the severe acute respiratory syndrome (SARS) coronavirus, the SARS-CoV-2 virus that causes COVID-19, and the Middle East respiratory syndrome (MERS) coronavirus. The actual UV treatment effect of the product depends on the UV dosage and the mode of use, and has not been specifically tested against the new coronavirus.
Honeywell is currently accepting orders for UV treatment packages, with the first products due to ship in April of this year. Honeywell's previously released aircraft cabin UV treatment system is now used by several airlines and ground handling companies, including JetBlue, Qatar Airways and Azure Air Brazil.
