The next generation of inhalers will feature Honeywell Solstice® Air propellants, which will reduce greenhouse gas emissions by up to 99.9% compared to the propellants used in current respiratory inhalers
The project further demonstrates Honeywell's commitment to reducing greenhouse gas emissions and contributing to customers' sustainability goals through product innovation
Charlotte, NC, United States, March 21, 2022 – Honeywell (NASDAQ: HON) today announced a commercial partnership with AstraZeneca (LSE: AZN) to develop and bring to market next-generation respiratory inhalers for the treatment of asthma and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease. The inhaler will use a propellant with a global warming potential (GWP) of less than 1.
According to statistics, up to 384 million people worldwide suffer from chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) (a progressive respiratory disease), and 339 million children and adults suffer from asthma. Many of these patients are currently using pressurized metered-dose inhalers (pMDIs) in their treatments, which add to the global carbon footprint of the respiratory medical industry.
AstraZeneca, one of the global leaders in the treatment of respiratory diseases, is actively introducing Honeywell's Solstice® Air (HFO-1234ze cGMP) technology as a medical propellant. Honeywell's Solstice® Air propellants enable pressurized metered-dose inhalers to reduce greenhouse gas emissions by up to 99.9% compared to current inhaler propellants. Solstice® Air is currently the only non-flammable, GWP less than 1 propellant in clinical development for pressurized metered-dose inhalers.
A recently completed Phase I clinical trial of HFO-1234ze propellant in a pressurized metered-dose inhaler containing budesonide, glycopyrrolate and formoterol fumarate in healthy adults showed positive results, demonstrating similar active ingredient safety, tolerability and systemic exposure compared to AstraZeneca's Breztri Aerosphere (Chinese trade names: Beztri ® Lingchang ®, budesonide/glycopyrrolate/formoterol fumarate, budigafor inhalation aerosol). AstraZeneca expects Breztri Aerosphere to be the first drug to transition to a next-generation pressurized metered-dose inhaler platform, subject to regulatory approval.
In light of the positive results of the Phase I clinical trial, AstraZeneca will advance its commercial partnership with Honeywell to develop the Breztri Aerosphere triple therapy using Honeywell's near-zero global warming potential (GWP) propellant technology.
"AstraZeneca is making significant progress towards achieving zero carbon emissions across its global operations by 2025 and carbon negative across its entire value chain by 2030." Pascal Soriot, CEO of AstraZeneca, said: "The partnership with Honeywell is a testament to AstraZeneca's commitment to advancing sustainable medical innovation with the aim of improving patient outcomes while reducing our impact on the environment. ”
"Honeywell's respiratory inhaler, developed in collaboration with AstraZeneca, uses Honeywell's new near-zero GWP propellant, which has important implications for patients with both environmental and respiratory diseases." Darius Adamczyk, Chairman and Chief Executive Officer of Honeywell, said, "Our goal is to reduce the carbon footprint of respiratory disease treatment without restricting patient choice and health outcomes. The partnership with AstraZeneca is one of many examples of Honeywell's innovative technology helping partners achieve their environmental goals and maintain the high quality of customer service. ”
Honeywell's Solstice® Air propellant is a technological breakthrough for pressurized metered-dose inhalers. As a non-flammable, low-GWP alternative to hydrofluorocarbons (HFCs), Solstice® Air propellants are ozone-depleting, contain no volatile organic compounds (required by United States EPA and California Air Resources Board regulations), have an ultra-low GWP of less than 1, and are currently the only next-generation HFO propellants that are not subject to the new United States Innovation and Manufacturing Act (AIM) quota in 2020.
More than a decade ago, Honeywell foresaw the need for lower-GWP solutions to help the world combat climate change, and has invested $1 billion in R&D and capacity expansion for Solstice® technology. This range of products helps customers reduce greenhouse gas emissions and improve energy efficiency without compromising the performance of the end product. The Solstice® series of products are widely used in supermarket refrigeration, vehicle air conditioning, foaming agents for insulation materials, propellants for personal and home care products, and cleaning liquid solvents.
To date, the rollout of the Solstice® family of products has helped reduce the emissions of more than 250 million tons of CO2e, which is equivalent to reducing the potential emissions of more than 52 million vehicles throughout the year.
Honeywell is committed to achieving carbon neutrality across all operations and facilities by 2035. This commitment builds on Honeywell's long history of improving its own environmental and sustainability performance, as well as a decades-long tradition of innovation to help customers achieve their environmental and social goals. Approximately 60 percent of Honeywell's new product development is driven by improving the environmental and social performance of its customers.
