Honeywell's JetWave high-speed Wi-Fi satellite communication system has been approved by the Civil Aviation Administration of China as a supplemental model
The Supplementary Type Certificate for Commercial Aviation Connectivity Solutions issued by the European Aviation Safety Agency (EASA) has been recognized by the Civil Aviation Administration of China
The certification will help airlines achieve high-speed in-flight internet comparable to home networks
Honeywell's (NYSE: HON) MCS-8420 JetWave satellite communications system has received Supplemental Type Approval (VSTC) from the Civil Aviation Administration of China (CAAC), enabling Chinese airlines to achieve high-speed and stable inflight connectivity. With the cooperation between Honeywell and Lufthansa Technologies, the satellite communication system will be used in the connectivity solution of the Airbus A320 fleet of Chinese airlines. It is also one of the first supplementary type certificates for commercial aviation connectivity solutions issued by the European Aviation Safety Agency (EASA) recognized by the Civil Aviation Administration of China, thanks to the signing of the Civil Aviation Security Agreement between the Government of the People's Republic of China and the European Union.
The MCS-8420 Jetwave satellite communication system is designed to connect to China's Ka-band satellite network. After installing the system, Chinese airlines will be able to connect their fleets to high-speed Internet, which will not only enable passengers to experience high-speed Wi-Fi at an altitude of 10,000 meters, but also help cabin crews better manage aircraft, reduce fleet fuel costs and avoid aircraft delays, thereby enhancing the competitiveness and profitability of airlines in the global aviation market. Honeywell is advancing forensics for the MCS-8420 JetWave satellite communications system for other aircraft.
In today's always-on society, the ability to stay connected during flight is fast becoming a common expectation, making inflight connectivity from Honeywell's JetWave satellite communications system an important differentiator for operators. "We have also noticed that digitalization has been mentioned many times in China's 14th Five-Year Plan, and exploring new development opportunities through digital transformation has become the focus of many airlines. The successful forensics of the MCS-8420 JetWave will significantly enhance Honeywell's support for high-speed satellite communications on board the aircraft in China, which is another highlight of Honeywell's digitalization achievements. We look forward to continuing to explore with our partners to jointly promote the digitalization of China's aviation industry."
The certification is based on the Technical Implementation Procedures of the Civil Aviation Administration of China and the European Union Aviation Safety Agency on Airworthiness and Environmental Certification, which is a refinement of the EU-China Civil Aviation Safety Agreement and allows both parties to carry out initial and subsequent certification within the specified process, so that the time frame for the certification can be predicted. "This is a milestone in the cooperation between the Civil Aviation Administration of China (CAAC) and the European Aviation Safety Agency (EASA) in the field of commercial aviation connectivity. The extremely lightweight design and the installation tests of more than 300 aircraft allowed us to achieve a quick installation in less than 4 days with longer maintenance intervals, helping airlines achieve very competitive low operating costs. Lukas Bucher, Head of Connected Solutions at Lufthansa Technology.
Honeywell's JetWave satellite communications system can reach speeds of up to 180mbps, enabling seamless interconnection on the Ka-band around the world. In November 2019, Honeywell's Boeing 757 connected aircraft, equipped with the MCS-8420 JetWave satellite communications system, completed ground and flight tests in China.
