Fuji Electric Corporation (headquartered in Tokyo, Japan; President: Mitsuhiro Kitazawa) announced the official launch of its laser gas analyzer for EGCS to support the marine systems business.
1. Background
In order to reduce emissions of sulphur (SOx), a substance that can cause air pollution, the International Maritime Organization (IMO) has stipulated that by 2020, the sulphur content of ship fuel in all marine areas except designated areas*1 will not exceed 0.5% (currently 3.5%). This regulation applies to all existing and new-build vessels. Once the regulation is strengthened, shipowners will have to switch to fuels with lower sulphur content, or install exhaust gas scrubbers (SOx scrubbers). *2 In addition, ships equipped with SOx scrubbers will need to continuously monitor the ratio of sulfur dioxide (SO2) to carbon dioxide (CO2) gas content as an indicator of exhaust gas purification performance.
Recently, Fuji Electric launched an exhaust gas monitoring system such as the EGCS laser gas analyzer, which is the smallest in the world. In 2018, it also launched the Spread Exhaust Gas Purification System (EGCS). Fuji Electric will further strengthen its marine systems business by applying this product to its own EGCS system and expanding sales of this type of analyzer to other scrubber manufacturers.

2. Product Features
1) The world's smallest and most flexible configuration
The conventional infrared gas analyzer is divided into 4 units: a sampling device for sucking the exhaust gas from the exhaust pipe and heating pipe, a sampling device (with pretreatment function) for removing dust and moisture from the exhaust gas, a control device for power supply and communication to each device, and a gas analyzer for measuring the concentration of SO2 and CO2 in the exhaust gas. Therefore, a large installation space is required to install it in a large cabinet.
This product integrates the pre-processing function into the sampling section and adopts a three-unit structure design consisting of a detector, a controller, and a sampler. The installation position is flexible, and the units can be mounted on the wall or floor. As a result, it does not need to be stored in panels, resulting in a 90% reduction in volume compared to our products, making it the smallest model in the world. All this makes it easy to install on existing vessels (for retrofit needs).
2) Adopt laser technology, which greatly reduces the frequency of maintenance
The laser method uses a laser element and a photodiode to measure the SO2 and CO2 content simultaneously. Compared to the infrared method, the laser method significantly reduces signal noise. As a result, calibration is reduced to once a year (IR requires weekly calibration). In addition, operating costs are reduced by 50% or lower than the infrared method, and the number of spare parts is also reduced.
The ship certificate requires high measurement accuracy when applied on the ship, as well as environmental resistance (vibration resistance, high temperature resistance, etc.). Achieving this goal is difficult during the development phase. However, Fuji Electric was able to secure the level of measurement accuracy required for certification by leveraging its technical capabilities in mechanical design and signal processing, which we have cultivated in various fields such as incineration plants and steel plants in Japan. Eventually, we achieved the launch of the first commercial laser gas analyzer in Japan for marine scrubbers.
