Fuji Electric Corporation (headquartered in Tokyo, Japan, President Mitsuhiro Kitazawa) is pleased to announce that the company has expanded its 7th generation X-Series IGBT module product line*¹ to target the massive wind power market and has begun sample shipments in the 1,700 volt voltage class.

1. Goals
IGBT modules can be installed in industrial equipment such as inverters that drive motors, uninterruptible power supply systems (UPS), and power conditioning systems (PCS) for wind or photovoltaic power plants, and are key to achieving a win-win situation of energy saving and stable power supply.
In 2015, Fuji Electric launched the 7th generation X-series IGBT modules in the 650 volt and 1,200 volt voltage levels, contributing to the energy-saving and stable power supply of various equipment and factories, including air conditioners and motor control inverters, UPS, and PCS. Fuji Electric has recently added a 1,700-volt voltage rating to its product line, targeting the huge wind power market.
In an increasingly environmentally conscious environment, the demand for clean energy from renewable energy sources is growing worldwide. In 2018, the market size of industrial IGBT modules reached about 23.4 billion RMB and is expected to continue to grow at an annual rate of 3.5%. *2 Many countries and regions, especially Europe and China, are building more and more large-scale wind power plants. The total global market for such power plants is expected to grow by 591GW in 2018 and at an annual rate of 8% through 2023 (Source: GWEC). With the expansion of this product line, Fuji Electric aims to further increase sales of the 7th generation X-Series IGBT modules.

2. Features of the 7th generation X-series products
1) Save energy by reducing power loss
The IGBT module consists of an IGBT that is responsible for current switching and a diode with a freewheeling current (FWD) function.
Fuji Electric's seventh-generation products, IGBT and FWD wafers are getting thinner and thinner, and the surface structure of IGBTs is getting finer and finer. Compared to conventional products (6th generation V-series), it can reduce the power loss generated by the inverter during operation by about 10%. At the same time, it helps to save on the energy and electricity costs of the installed equipment.
2) It is conducive to the miniaturization of equipment
A newly developed insulating substrate is applied to the module to improve heat dissipation. In addition, the substrate improves heat dissipation due to reduced losses, thereby increasing the continuous maximum operating junction temperature from the conventional 150 degrees Celsius to 175 degrees Celsius. The output current can be increased by up to 30%*³ while the size of the entire device remains the same. This helps to reduce the size of the equipment and reduce the overall cost.
