TOKYO, February 21, 2020 – Mitsubishi Electric Corporation (TOKYO:6503) announced today that it has been appointed by the Japan Aeronautics and Astronautics Agency (JAXA) as the contractor for the Mars Lunar Probe (MMX) space probe. Mitsubishi Electric has already launched development activities for this project and will take charge of the system design, manufacturing, and operation of MMX, utilizing the technology it originally developed for the Intelligent Lunar Lander (SLIM) and the "Kounotori" H-II. Transfer Cart (HTV). MMX's mission is to determine the origins of Mars and its two moons, Phobos and Deimos, as well as to discover how water and organic matter became part of the primordial solar system.

1) Mature technology will support the world's first Mars-Moon round-trip mission
The MMX space probe will incorporate existing space technologies, such as trajectory analysis and orbit deployment, which Mitsubishi Electric originally developed for the SLIM's high-precision landing system, as well as the guidance, navigation and control systems for HTV.
2) New precision landing technology for landing on unknown terrain
To collect samples of one of the Martian moons, the descent and landing will use a built-in camera and a precise landing technique developed for SLIM. Moreover, with the newly developed shock absorber and a unique landing gear, it was possible to make several landing attempts in low gravity.
3) Lightweight design with three-module configuration
The three-module design includes a propulsion module for travel to the vicinity of Mars, an exploration module equipped with a research payload, and a return module for returning to Earth, which will allow the MMX to reduce weight and thus operate more efficiently by disengaging from the propulsion module. and, once it has fulfilled its purpose, it is an exploration module. In addition, in order to design the MMX within the capabilities of the launch vehicle (rocket), the optimal travel plan will be developed to minimize the amount of propellant required, which accounts for more than half of the total weight of the launch.
