The new maintenance system "key in pocket" from Pilz prevents the risk of unauthorised machine restarts and increases the safety of maintenance work. Digital maintenance assurance is based on the access authorization system PITreader, which ensures the safety of machinery and industrial information: during the maintenance process, only authorized personnel can access the plant or machine, preventing tampering and misuse.
Large factories often have a large number of hazardous areas, which are often protected with safety fences. This places special demands on safety: for example, it is important that only authorized personnel are allowed to carry out maintenance work. At the same time, it is critical to ensure that no one remains in the danger zone when the plant is restarted.
Pilz has launched a digital maintenance system "Key in the Pocket" that flexibly meets the requirements of machinery safety and industrial security: ensuring that machines are not restarted while maintenance work is being carried out and cannot be operated by unauthorized persons. The solution ensures the safety of the equipment in the event of a dangerous reboot and also ensures that maintenance work cannot be tampered with.
Authentication-based
The "key in your pocket" is based on the access authorization system PITreader and is implemented via the configurable small controller PNOZmulti 2 or the automation system PSS 4000. The user is given an RFID key with personal permissions and can read the authorization information on the security door with a PITreader. This allows one or more users who are authorized to perform maintenance work to verify their identity on the device. At any given time, operators can know which person has what task permissions and can assign permissions on an ad hoc basis. Once the authentication is complete, a unique security ID will be stored in the controller's security list. The machine can now be switched off, the safety door opened and the machine serviced. During this period, the RFID key, which we call the "key in the pocket", will remain in the custody of the user. When the maintenance work is completed and people leave the danger zone, everyone signs out. The safety ID is removed from the safety list of the Pilz controller and the machine can be restarted.
Simple, safe maintenance
The digital maintenance system is designed for machines with hazardous areas and is protected by safety fences. It provides a cost-effective alternative to mechanical tagout maintenance assurance systems, which are attached to all security gates. Since the plant can be entered or exited through different security gates, the "key in the pocket" provides greater flexibility for the staff and saves time during maintenance.
