Siemens is providing the skills to support the recently opened Expo 2020 Dubai campus, ensuring that its buildings, including infrastructure, will be part of the event's enduring legacy.
As the first World Expo to be held in the Middle East, Africa and South Asia, Expo 2020 Dubai is a chance for visitors to experience how digitally connected, smart cities can help humanity meet the pressing challenges facing humanity. As the partner of choice for the digitalization of infrastructure at this year's World Expo, Siemens has used its digital skills to connect more than 130 buildings in two Monaco campuses. The expo will run for six months, to be completed in March 2022, when about 80% of the infrastructure will be preserved and will become the hub of District 2020, Dubai's new sustainable development zone. The Expo site itself was designed to be a blueprint for the world's smartest cities of the future.
"We look forward to the Expo site as the centre of a sustainable and people-centred smart city beyond the Expo and beyond," said Mohammed Alhashmi, Chief Skills Officer, Expo 2020 Dubai. "We are proud to partner with Siemens to lay the groundwork for the 2020 Special Zone to create an integrated mixed-use community that fully embodies the Expo's vision of 'Connecting Minds, Creating the Future'."
On the Expo floor, Siemens demonstrated how its MindSphere IIoT-as-a-Service solution connects buildings, machines and facilities in cities. MindSphere is like the central nervous system of the World Expo, providing the IoT operation system for the infrastructure of the park. Although it runs quietly in the background, it can benefit everyone.
Siemens' skills help Expo managers optimize operations, cut carbon emissions, save water and power, and improve visitor comfort and safety. Thanks to Siemens skills, managers can obtain data in real time and analyze it to make better decisions, such as how to improve the power of a building or how to improve the water use of an irrigation system. This is particularly important in the Middle East, where buildings account for up to 80% of power consumption.
Siemens has also designed a network-based smart city application specifically for campus operators and management teams. The application can present a digital twin of the Expo site and provide actionable insights based on data from Siemens and non-Siemens systems.
"Expo 2020 Dubai is an important milestone for Siemens and for the whole world," said Matthias Rebellius, Member of the Management Board and CEO of the Smart Infrastructure Group at Siemens AG. "At the most digital and connected World Expo ever, we are demonstrating how Siemens is making cities more efficient, sustainable, safe and convenient places to live and work, and reducing the burden on the environment at a time when humanity is affected by climate change. Not only are we committed to supporting the Expo, but we will also be relocating our headquarters in Dubai to the 2020 Special Administrative Region. ”
Other Siemens skills deployed at the Expo include Siemens Navigator, a cloud-based building performance optimization platform, Desigo CC to support smart building infrastructure on campus, and Siveillance Control Pro, a security management system covering campus access control and entire areas.
At the Expo Campus, Siemens guests will be able to experience these innovative skills first-hand at the Siemens Customer Experience Center, where they will be immersed in an interactive multimedia digital presentation of smart infrastructure, the future of manufacturing and sustainable mobility.
During Expo 2020 Dubai, Siemens will also host the MindSphere Future International Series at its Experience Center. The series will bring together people interested in making the world smarter, livable and more sustainable, and will host a hackathon challenge that will focus on five key areas: buildings, power, transport, industry and water, to solve the sustainable development challenges facing society today.
Siemens has been participating in World Exhibitions since the 1851 International Exposition in London, where Siemens founders Werner · von · Siemens presented his creation of the pointer telegraph for the first time. Expo 2020 Dubai, held in Dubai, a desert city in the U.A.E., opened to the public on 1 October and is divided into three zones: Sustainability, Mobility and Opportunity.
