Tokuyama Corporation and Panasonic Corporation announced today that they have begun demonstration work on a pure hydrogen fuel cell generator that uses hydrogen as a by-product of the Tokuyama Tokuyama Plant in Shunan City, Yamaguchi Prefecture. The demo period is scheduled to end in March 2023.
The by-product hydrogen comes from the process of making caustic soda. Interest in hydrogen as a next-generation energy source accelerates worldwide as efforts to decarbonize society accelerate. The useful use of by-product hydrogen is important not only from the viewpoint of energy security to avoid global warming, but also from the viewpoint of the contribution of the chemical industry to society through the useful use of by-products.
In this demonstration, the equipment was installed at the Tokuyama plant. The device is configured as an ensemble that integrates six pure hydrogen fuel cell generators developed by Panasonic into a single unit. The hydrogen supply pipeline, heat pipeline, and power output pipeline are connected and integrated with the unit, and the coordinated operation of the six pure hydrogen fuel cell generator sets is completed. This is the first demonstration of the integrated operation of 6 pure hydrogen fuel cell generators in Japan.
Tokuyama provides a stable supply of hydrogen as a by-product for pure hydrogen fuel cell generators. This by-product hydrogen is produced in the process of producing caustic soda by brine electrolysis in an ion exchange membrane process. The electricity generated by the demonstration equipment is used in the factory office, and the heat generated by the power generation is recovered in the form of hot water. Tokuyama has always been committed to the useful use of by-product hydrogen, and through the use of hydrogen, it has established a model of dedication for local communities. This demonstration assignment is carried out as part of such efforts.
On the other hand, Panasonic verifies and evaluates the operation performance of the by-product hydrogen and the integrated operation of the system. The system's six generator sets can be individually operated and each generating 700 watts of power. As a result, the system allows for sensitive power output settings ranging from 700 W to 4.2 kW. This is for future applications, the integrated control of the system provides the primary power requirement. And, even if one generator fails, the remaining five generators will continue to operate. If the individual generators are protected sequentially, this function allows the generator integration system to continue to supply power.
With this demonstration, Tokuyama and Panasonic will further advance their efforts to achieve a hydrogen society.
