Yamaha's solution will apply what it has learned during the construction of Motobot to improve its various products, including motorcycles, snowmobiles, ATVs, and industrial robots. Yamaha made it clear that "advanced rider safety systems" may be one of the areas where Motobot can help push.
The company said it may also use its common sense to explore new areas of business. Although it doesn't provide examples of this, in part, it's the possibilities that make Motobot so enticing.
While other automakers are concentrating on building vehicles that can drive themselves — IDS is just one example — Yamaha is trying to create a robot that can drive a general unmodified vehicle. It's reminiscent of a robot driver.
The Yamaha Motobot will eventually opt for "machine learning" to improve its lap times on the track.
It will take time for Motobot to get to that point.
Now, it has six actuators for steering direction, throttle, front brake, rear brake, clutch, and shift pedal. The ultimate goal is to use high-precision GPS, various sensors, and artificial intelligence—what Yamaha calls "machine learning"—to "allow Motobot to make autonomous decisions about the best track route and motorcycle functional constraints, among other things, to improve lap times in successive laps." The company said.
Yamaha's plan allowed Motobot to make turns, trek on twisty tracks, and go straight at 62 mph by the end of the year. By 2017, it expects Motobot to be able to circle the track at speeds of 124 miles per hour or more and start developing technology that surpasses human motorcyclists.
Yamaha expects that the Motobot will be suitable for other vehicles such as snowmobiles and private boats. By 2020, the company expects to begin to apply the technology and common sense learned from the Motobot project to consumer products.
"By using Motobot technology to optimize vehicle dynamics, we will develop more functional and safer mobility tools," Yamaha said.
The Motobot was one of the seven Yamaha exhibits that made their world premieres at the Tokyo Motor Show. The rest are: SportsRideConcept, a sports car design test; three-wheeled motorcycle MWT-9; two electric motorcycles, one of which is the innovative two-wheel drive motorcycle PES2; electric mountain bikes; and the retro-style motorcycle Resonator 125.
While many auto shows focus on production cars, the Tokyo Motor Show is best known for concept cars. It is worth mentioning that a rather futuristic motorcycle happens to be one of the most visible concept cars at the previous Tokyo Motor Shows. The bike, called the FV2, is designed to show that drivers can still enjoy driving in the age of autonomous driving.
