Fuji Electric Corporation (Representative Director: Tsuhiro Kitazawa; Headquarters: Shinagawa-ku, Tokyo) is pleased to announce the launch of the X-Series IGBT-IPM*1, a power semiconductor product equipped with the latest seventh-generation X-Series chips that significantly reduce losses.

1. Background

Manufacturing companies continue to introduce CNC machine tools and robots that help to realize the automation of production sites to improve productivity, and in the context of global warming, how to make production equipment more energy-efficient has become a problem faced by manufacturing enterprises.

As a power semiconductor product, an IGBT module is an electronic component that changes the voltage and frequency by switching (power-off and power-on) and converts power such as alternating current and direct current. IGBT-IPM is an IGBT module with self-protection function that can prevent failures caused by overcurrent, overheating, etc., so it is widely used in equipment such as CNC machine tools and industrial robots that require high reliability.

The company launched the X-Series IGBT-IPM equipped with the latest seventh-generation X-Series chips, and will contribute to energy-saving production equipment with industry-leading low-loss performance. The new product will go into mass production in December and will be introduced to the global market, mainly in Japan and China, where automation is advanced.

2. Product features

(1) Energy saving of production equipment with low loss performance

This product is equipped with the latest 7th generation IGBT chip, which has improved thickness reduction and surface structure miniaturization compared to the 6th generation IGBT chip, and has high low-loss performance. In addition, the switching speed of conventional power semiconductors slows down as the operating temperature increases, resulting in higher losses. However, by controlling the IC that drives the IGBT, the new product is able to maintain the switching speed at high temperatures, thereby reducing losses.

Compared to the previous model (V-Series IGBT-IPM), this product reduces the loss during inverter operation by about 10%, and by suppressing heat generation caused by loss, the installation area can be reduced by up to 54% compared to the previous model, thereby contributing to energy saving and miniaturization of production equipment.

(2) Industry-leading temperature warning output function, which helps the stable operation of the equipment

The IGBT-IPM is equipped with an IGBT chip overtemperature protection function. When the temperature of the IGBT chip exceeds 175°C, the IGBT-IPM will send an alarm signal to the control device (controller, etc.) of the device, and at the same time, stop the switching operation, so as to prevent the failure of the IGBT-IPM.

In addition, this product is also equipped with an industry-leading "temperature warning output function", which will send an alarm signal once the temperature of the IGBT chip exceeds 150°C. The switching action is continuous from the time the IGBT chip sends an alarm signal to the 175°C when the overtemperature protection is triggered, so that the operator can shut down the production equipment at any point via the machine's controls for repairs. This avoids sudden downtime of production equipment and contributes to the stable operation of the equipment.
