Tokyo, March 30, 2020 – Mitsubishi Electric Corporation (Tokyo: 6503) announced today that it has been appointed by the Japan Aerospace Agency (JAXA) as the contractor for the Global Satellite Observing Satellite for the Greenhouse Gas and Water Cycle (GOSAT-GW), the third satellite in the GOSAT series, and development activities have already begun. The mission of GOSAT-GW is twofold: greenhouse gas observation by the Ministry of the Environment of Japan and the National Institute for Environmental Research (NIES), and water cycle observation by JAXA. Through the development of the GOSAT-GW satellite, Mitsubishi Electric will contribute to the prevention of disasters caused by global warming and climate change, and promote the development of scientific and technological methods that will enable more accurate prediction of climate change.

Key features:
1) A new type of sensor that can accurately observe greenhouse gas concentrations on a global scale
GOSAT-GW will be equipped with a sensor called the Total Anthropogenic and Natural Emissions Profiler 3 (TANSO-3) to observe the concentrations of greenhouse gases such as carbon dioxide and methane over a large area and make high-precision measurements to improve the accuracy of estimating greenhouse gas emissions. The global observation model of TANSO-3 will cover a large area of the Earth's surface without discontinuity, so more observation points can be achieved compared to the previous model. TANSO-3 will also have detailed observation modes with three times the spatial resolution of its predecessor, GOSAT-2 ("Ibuki-2"), which will allow for more accurate observation of greenhouse gases.
2) Enhance geophysical quantity observations to improve the water cycle and meteorological monitoring
GOSAT-GW will also be equipped with the newly developed Advanced Microwave Scanning Radiometer 3 (AMSR3), which will estimate the geophysical quantities of Earth's water on land, at sea surface and in the atmosphere. AMSR3 will use more frequency bands than previous versions to more accurately estimate hydrogeophysical conditions such as precipitation, water vapour, sea ice and sea surface temperature. The data obtained from the observations will improve the accuracy of forecasts for typhoons, heavy rains and other climatic conditions by meteorological organizations around the world. In addition, by providing detailed data to assess the impact of climate change on the water cycle, GOSAT-GW will contribute to efforts to measure the impact of climate change on daily life and develop necessary countermeasures.
