Why is it called a collaborative robot?
The definition of collaboration is not so much determined by the tasks performed as by the capabilities of the robot that make collaboration safe and useful for working side-by-side with humans. Machines and people can work on the same task, assembly, object, or activity at the same time in the same physical area, such as a work cell, workstation, or workbench.
There are several types of cobots that can be used "off-the-shelf", which means that there are options to suit a variety of needs. Most cobots can also be customized and integrated into manufacturing production systems using accessories and tools such as vision cameras, suction cup grippers, and welding tips.
The flexibility of cobots
In stark contrast to old-fashioned robots, the collaboration model can be a mobile multitasker. They are small in size, lightweight, and able to move around manufacturing floors or facilities. Once at a new destination, a simple and intuitive operator panel enables operators to quickly switch between tasks. Many models can also be programmed for new operations by manually guiding the arm through the steps when needed. This flexibility is useful for small to medium-sized manufacturers, especially those in high-mix/low-volume and just-in-time (JIT) setups.
The capabilities of cobots
The URe series of your robots is available in 4 different sizes and payload capacities, maximum reach distances and operating speeds. Most are compact, and the UR3E is small enough to be mounted on a bench or on a sturdy cart. Larger models can be mounted on the floor (or ceiling or wall, depending on the application). Traditional industrial arms can move at speeds of 3 m/s or more, while most cobots have a maximum speed of 1.5 m/s, although they typically operate at speeds of 1 m/s or less, depending on the distance from human colleagues. Six-axis motion is used, allowing for complex movements around and between other devices.
summary
Another distinguishing feature shared by UR robots is the built-in controls for enhanced safe operation. These include programmable settings to create faster or slower "zones", collision avoidance, and sensors to stop the machine when a hand or other object enters an unexpected area.
In addition to safety, ergonomics can be improved with cobot assistants. This is especially important as workers age, lose flexibility, and feel the effects of standing, lifting, or twisting early in their shift. It also offers the option to expand the range of abilities and skills needed to perform a job, such as programming a robotic arm to perform a task, adjusting settings based on computer data, or performing work while sitting. With these features, you can increase your manufacturing workforce.
