Robotics is now highly interrelated with scientific research. In the scientific community, Universal Robots (UR) is used to help develop innovative solutions and create the basis for objective information collection and analysis. UR collaborative robots have high accuracy and have been used in many research institutions and universities. In addition, UR has established the UR Academy, which lowers the barrier to entry for cobot learning, offering simple, intuitive, free online courses, as well as classroom and virtual training courses taught by certified trainers around the world.
In this article, Mikkel Vahl, Global Head of Training and Education at Universal Robots, discusses the key role of UR Academy in deploying cobots.
UR Academy Overview
In 2016, UR launched its first Academy module. Today, UR Academy has more than 100,000 users from more than 130 countries, offering online and cobot training offline courses in 16 languages. UR has 65 authorized training centers in 24 countries and plans to further expand its training center team in 2021.
UR Academy was established to help users train in-house cobot experts so that they can become proficient in operating UR cobots. The results are already being seen. Users trained by the UR Academy have significantly reduced the time it takes to install cobots, and they can deploy more cobots in less time to build and grow their cobot fleet.
In addition, when UR conducts academy training, it also communicates with schools, from primary school to university, and vocational training centers, providing them with hands-on programming experience and real operation of cobots.
More cobots are appearing in the classroom
Research and education has always been one of UR's areas of focus. The "skills gap" is not a new term, and manufacturers struggle to find skilled employees. Bringing cobots into the classroom can help close this gap and give students the skills they need for employment. Cobots are the best classroom companions, not only because they are safe and easy to operate, but they are also the ones they will actually use in their work environments in the future.
UR Academy focuses on practice and interaction
The common denominator of all courses at UR Academy is practical, interactive, realistic and visual. UR listens to user feedback and makes adjustments to the curriculum. Here are the three main areas of focus for UR Academy right now:
Short-term professional training programs
A professional training certificate can add value to a resume. Surveys show that the vast majority of HR managers have a favorable opinion of interviewees who hold professional training certificates. The majority of employees also said they would like more opportunities for career development. Through the UR Academy Learning Management System, UR has begun offering the world's first collaborative robotics course to schools and colleges. Now, schools can purchase cobots with relevant application hardware (conveyor belts, jigs, etc.), 32 lessons, an online content management platform, and teacher certificates to enable their students to earn industry-recognized credentials that will stand out from the crowd of job seekers in the future.
Upon completion of the full course, students will have the same level of cobot knowledge as industry professionals who complete the core training modules at an authorized training center. Currently, UR offers it in schools in Germany, Spain, and the United States
courses, which are expected to add three additional markets by the second quarter of 2021.
Distance learning
Due to the coronavirus pandemic, UR has cancelled courses at some authorized training centers and started offering remote learning. Tools such as the UR simulator and remote cobot control options are important in remote learning. We are developing a 3D environment for the simulator that provides the same programming experience as a pilot using a flight simulator. In 2021, we expect to be able to train thousands of students.
Customized learning
UR is currently considering moving away from the standardized module. Some students may not need to learn vision, but need more knowledge about CNC machine interfaces. UR wants to create sticky learning and provide free online training to help potential customers deploy and operate cobots with confidence. Once they have cobots, UR will provide situation-specific training content and expertise development to help users continuously improve their skills.

Universal Robots – a common fault with welding robots
1. Welding deviation problem: it may be that the welding position is incorrect or there is a problem when looking for the welding gun. In this case, it is necessary to consider whether the TCP (welding torch center point position) is accurate and adjust it. If this situation occurs frequently, it is necessary to check the zero position of each axis of the robot, and re-calibrate it to repair.

Universal Robots – Classification and detailed description of robotic arms
1. Handling robotic arm
This kind of robotic arm is very versatile, and generally only needs to be controlled by points. That is, there is no strict motion trajectory requirement for the transported parts, and only the start and end point posture are required to be accurate. For example, the loading and unloading tool used in the machine tool, the workpiece stacking robotic arm, the machinery used in the injection molding machine, etc.
