Brau Union is a beer production company from Austria that belongs to the famous beer brand Heineken Group, which supplies more than 5 million liters of beer per year. The company's largest brewery is in Wieselburg, which accounts for one-fifth of the year's beer supply. Within the Heineken Group, Wieselburg is the plant that produces the most double-zero beverages (i.e. beer with 0.0% alcohol) in Austria. According to statistics, the products of the Wieselburg plant can be used in 130 different packaging.
For Brau Union, "safety first" is the primary operating principle: regular safety inspections of existing plants and processes. This includes the cleaning and filling of reusable barrels, which have been in operation since 1993, washing beer residues and refilling up to 700 barrels per hour.
Faced with such an "old" machine, Brau Union knew that a safe retrofit was imperative and turned to Pilz, a specialist in safe automation, as a partner. Pilz re-evaluated and validated the intervention options on the machine and retrofitted the controller. From consulting with the current standards that must be complied with, to the inspection of existing safety equipment and emergency stop safety chains, Pilz also analyses potential sources of danger and recommends appropriate interlocks and safety concepts tailored to the plant.
Safe and practical
On barrel cleaning and filling equipment, it is important that part of the protective fence can be easily removed so that maintenance personnel can use a forklift to advance to the centrally located media distributor for service operations. To meet this requirement, Pilz decided to use a mobile fence. Also included in the solution is a new access management system that ensures that only authorized operators can confirm faults that have been corrected and get the system back up and running. Brau Union benefits from consulting services from Pilz – from the analysis of potential danger points, including the identified countermeasures, to the implementation of safety-related validations in accordance with international safety directives and standards such as EN ISO 13849, IEC 62061 and IEC 61508.
"We're always learning about safety, but it's hard to stay up-to-date if we don't deal with these issues and understand the relevant laws. That's why we trust Pilz's technology and expertise in this area. Andreas Schmutz, Plant Technical Supervisor at Brau Union.
With a comprehensive product portfolio and extensive service experience in the field of machinery safety and automation, Pilz is ready to offer complete solutions to its customers.

Peel magnetic relay – the role of intermediate relays
1. Replace small contactors: the contacts of the central relay have a certain ability to carry load, and when the load capacity is relatively small, it can be used to replace the use of small contactors, such as electric roller shutters and the control of some small household appliances. This not only serves the purpose of control, but also saves space, ...

Pilmagnetic switches – what are the requirements for a fixed safety switch?
1. The fastener itself needs to be reliable and stable enough.
2. Need to rely on special tools to remove, such as hexagon screws, star screws, etc. Phillips/slotted screws are not recommended, as in some cases they can be easily fitted with fingernails or on the go.
