On July 26, it was reported that Fuji Electric will increase the production capacity of a new generation of power semiconductors in 2024 to about 10 times that of 2020.

Recently, it was reported that in order to cope with the growing demand for silicon carbide power semiconductors in pure electric vehicles (EVs) and other fields, Fuji Electric plans to increase the production capacity of silicon carbide power semiconductors to about 10 times that of 2020 in 2024. By 2025, the company aims to increase the sales of silicon carbide power semiconductors to about 10% of its semiconductor business, with the goal of capturing 2% of the global silicon carbide power semiconductor market by 2026.

Silicon carbide is known as an "ideal device" due to its stable chemical properties, high thermal conductivity, small thermal expansion coefficient, good wear resistance, high hardness and other characteristics, and is the most widely used in the current wide bandgap semiconductor. As the hottest market at present, new energy vehicles are also the field where silicon carbide can exert its most strength.

According to the latest data from Yole, Tesla's record shipments helped silicon carbide reach a market size of $1 billion in 2021. BYD, Hyundai, NIO, Xpeng and other EV manufacturers plan to bring electric vehicles using silicon carbide devices to the market in 2022. Yole predicts that the silicon carbide power device market is expected to grow from $1 billion in 2021 to more than $6 billion by 2027. It can be seen that the market prospect of silicon carbide power devices is very good.

Fuji Electric is a Japan manufacturer of heavy electrical equipment whose core technologies are power semiconductors and power electronics. Silicon carbide power semiconductors are its main focus of R&D and production in the near future, and Fuji Electric proposed as early as April 2021 that it would invest 120 billion yen (about 5.9 billion yuan) in power semiconductors in the next four years to increase production. In January 2022, it announced again that it would increase the investment to 190 billion yen (about 9.4 billion yuan), an increase of 60% from the original plan.

Fuji Electric's expansion plan is to establish a mass production system at its plants in Japan. It is reported that its Matsumoto plant in Matsumoto City, Nagano Prefecture, will increase production from 2022. Fuji Electric's subsidiary, Tsugaru Semiconductor, will also introduce a production line for silicon carbide power semiconductors at its plant, and mass production will begin in 2024.
