Industrial Ethernet switches are specifically designed to meet the needs of flexible industrial applications, providing a cost-effective Industrial Ethernet communication solution. The networking method focuses more on loop design. There are single-loop and multi-loop loops, and there are also private loop protocols designed by various manufacturers on the basis of STP and RSTP, such as RingOn, RingOpen open-loop, FRP loop, turbo loop, etc.
Manageable switches can be managed in several ways: via RS-232 serial (or parallel), via a web browser, and via network management software.
1. Manage through serial port
The managed switch comes with a serial cable for switch management. Plug one end of the serial cable into the serial port on the back of the switch, and the other end into the serial port of an ordinary computer. Then power on the switch and computer. Both Windows 98 and Windows 2000 provide the "HyperTerminal" program. After opening HyperTerminal and setting the connection parameters, you can interact with the switch through the serial cable. This method does not consume the bandwidth of the switch, so it is called "out of band".
In this management style, the switch provides a menu-driven console interface or command-line interface. You can use the "Tab" key or arrow keys to move through menus and submenus, press enter to execute the corresponding command, or use the dedicated switch management command set to manage the switch. Different brands of switches have different command sets, and even switches of the same brand have different commands. It's a little more convenient to use the menu commands.
2. Manage via the web
Manageable switches can be managed via a web (web browser), but the switch must be assigned an IP address. This IP address serves no purpose other than to be used by the management switch. By default, the switch does not have an IP address, and you must specify an IP address through serial ports or other means before you can enable this management mode.
When using a web browser to manage a switch, the switch is equivalent to a web server, but the web pages are not stored on the hard disk, but in the NVRAM of the switch, and the web program in the NVRAM can be upgraded through the program. When the administrator enters the IP address of the switch into the browser, the switch acts like a server to deliver web pages to the computer, giving you the feeling that you are visiting a website. This consumes the bandwidth of the switch and is therefore called "in band".
If you want to manage switches, just click on the corresponding function item on the webpage and change the parameters of the switch in the text box or drop-down list. Web management can be performed on a local area network, so remote management can be realized.
3. Management through network management software
The managed switches all follow the SNMP protocol (Simple Network Management Protocol), which is a complete set of network equipment management specifications that comply with international standards. All devices that follow the SNMP protocol can be managed by network management software. You only need to install a set of SNMP network management software on a network management workstation, and you can easily manage switches, routers, servers, etc. on the network through the LAN.
The management of manageable switches can be managed in the following three ways. Which way to do it? At the time of initial setup of the switch, it is often managed out-of-band; Once you have set the IP address, you can use the in-band management method. In-band management can be managed remotely because the management data is transmitted through a public LAN, but the security is not strong. Out-of-band management is communicated through serial ports, and data is only transmitted between the switch and the management machine, so it is very secure. However, due to the limitation of the length of the serial cable, remote management cannot be realized. So which approach you take depends on your requirements for security and manageability.
