A new partnership was recently entered into between Siemens (FWB: SIE) and Desktop Metal (NYSE: DM, Chinese Desktop Metal). The deal will facilitate the integration of Siemens' skills into Desktop Metal's 3D printers, which will help it further digitalize and industrialize additive manufacturing.
According to the announcement from the two companies, Siemens' operational, informational, and automation skills will be integrated into Desktop Metal printers. Together, these 3D printers will also be fully integrated into Siemens' simulation and planning software for machine and plant planning. This means that digital twins of these systems can be created to plan and optimize desktop printers, and Siemens Advantage is able to mimic binding nets and factory planning. Overall, this not only allows users to enhance the production of parts, but also makes it possible to create an ideal production plant.
This collaboration brings together the various products of Siemens and Desktop Metal. They will also collaborate on specific industrial-scale projects related to topics such as data processing and environment, health and safety. Binder eruption will be the focus of their efforts, and as they promote it as a highly efficient production method, they may have the ability to produce high yields.
Tim Bell, Head of Additive Manufacturing at Siemens in United States, said: "In many industries, additive manufacturing skills play a vital role in increasing material power and decarbonization. We are very excited about working with Desktop Metal. By combining the digital twin concepts we use for planning and modeling, as well as the automation of production systems, with the skills of Desktop Metal, the transition to scale will be accelerated. As additive manufacturing continues to industrialize, collaborations like this will drive additive manufacturing to the higher levels of quality and yield that traditional manufacturing methods can make today. "
Ric Fulop, Founder and CEO of Desktop Metal, said, "We are proud to be working with Siemens to improve the integration of Desktop Metal solutions with existing trusted Siemens production infrastructure, which will enable fabricators to prove production resources and concepts before purchasing a complete work cell. Enabling customers to mimic the different task moments of a good binder eruption process helps customers plan before purchasing any equipment. As our skills continue to move towards mass production, we trust that Siemens' skills will be of increasing value to our customers. "
As Desktop Metal seeks to tighten its business and continue its path to profitability, it is likely to become one of the key players in the full industrialization of additive manufacturing skills. Together, large multinationals like Siemens will be the beneficiaries of these developments on the part of small companies. According to Tim Bell in a presentation at the 2022 International Machine Tool Show, it has seen its hardware integrated into more than 120 of the approximately 350 industrial 3D printers on the market. Now, as it drives digital twins and mimicry software, it will find that as Industry 4.0 becomes a reality, both hardware and software for additive manufacturing will become indispensable.
One might wonder if Siemens will eventually buy a company like Desktop Metal when all is over. Given that it may have a place in more than one-third of all industrial 3D printer types on the market, it doesn't seem like it needs to have an OEM of its own.
