1. Classified by input/output points
(1) Small machine. The total number of small PLC I/O points is generally less than 256 points, and the function is mainly switch control. The memory capacity of the user program is less than 4K words. PLC is characterized by small size, low price, suitable for the operation of a single equipment, and the development of mechatronics products.
(2) Medium-sized machine. Small PLC manufacturers show that the total input and output points of medium-sized PLC are generally 256-2048, and the user program storage capacity reaches 2-8K words. Medium-sized PLC not only has the function of switching and analogue control, but also has a stronger digital accounting ability. Its communication function and imitation processing ability are more and more robust, and it is suitable for messy logic control system and continuous production process control occasions.
(3) Host. The total number of input and output points of PLC is greater than 2048, and the user program storage capacity is 8-16K words. It has the functions of accounting, control and regulation, as well as a strong network structure and communication networking ability. The monitoring system uses CRT displays, which can reproduce the dynamic process of the process. The host is suitable for automatic control of equipment, automatic process control and process monitoring system.
2. Classification by structure
Small PLC manufacturers show that according to the different PLC structures, PLC can be divided into integer and modular.
(1) Overall structure. The whole type is also called unit type or box type, which is small in size and low in price, and the whole structure is selected for the small PLC type.
The characteristic of the whole structure is that the basic components of the PLC, such as the CPU module, I/O module, and power supply, are compactly installed in a standardized cabinet to form the basic unit or expansion unit of the PLC. Fundamentally, the unit does not have an expansion port, and is connected to the expansion unit through an expansion line to form a different equipment of PLC.

At present, large and medium-sized PLCs mostly choose this structure.
3. Classification by function
Small PLC manufacturers show that according to the different functions of PLC, PLC can be divided into three categories: low-grade, mid-range and high-level.
(1) Low-grade PLC: It has the fundamental functions of logic operation, punctuality, counting, shifting, self-diagnosis, and monitoring. It can also have a small number of functions such as imitation input/output, arithmetic operations, data transmission and comparison, and communication. The stand-alone control system is mainly used for logical control, sequential control or a few imitation controls.
(2) Mid-range PLC: In addition to the function of low-grade PLC, it also has strong functions such as imitation input/output, arithmetic operation, data transmission and comparison, digital system conversion, long-distance I/O, subroutine, communication networking, etc. Some can also add functions such as abort control and PID control, which are suitable for messy control systems.
(3) Advanced PLC: In addition to the function of the mid-range accounting machine, it also adds special functions such as signed arithmetic operation, matrix operation, bit logic operation, square root operation, tabulation, table transmission and other functions. The advanced PLC accounting machine has a stronger communication network function, which can be used for large-scale process control or the formation of a distributed network control system to complete factory automation.
