Handling robots consisting of linear axes can be found everywhere along the entire value stream from incoming materials, production, assembly to packaging. These robots are integrated in separate machines and work as pick-and-place cells on semi-automatic or fully automated production lines. Linear robots are a compact, flexible and economical solution for handling tasks that offer maximum stiffness, precision and accuracy.
The new generation of intelligent linear robots for handling is a ready-to-install "plug-and-play solution" with intuitive software guidance for easy configuration and commissioning. With the Smart Function Kit, users can choose from pre-configured, ready-to-use linear robots online at any time. As with articulated robots, they can be ordered via an order number and can be easily commissioned. Compared to conventional Cartesian systems, the engineering volume can be reduced by up to 90% depending on the application area, as the entire subsystem does not need to be individually selected.
The road to the application of intelligent linear robots
With the Rexroth LinSelect electronic tool, structural engineers can directly select a proposed reference system and adjust it in a few steps. The configurator automatically advises individual components such as motors, connecting elements and energy chains, thus avoiding selection and construction errors. The design is then sent to the configurator specifying further details. Depending on the level of complexity, handling subsystems that used to take hours or even days to build can now be defined in a fraction of the time – in just 15 to 60 minutes during testing. Once the CAD data has been downloaded, it is also possible to embed the subsystem into the structure drawing. This also saves time.

Debugging and graphical programming
Currently, when debugging a linear system, it is often necessary to copy the parameters of each axis from a catalog, list, or nameplate. The parameters must then be manually entered into the drive, and the reference correction for each axis and the programming of the control system must be carried out. This process is repeated by the user for each new system. With the new linear robots, these time-consuming and error-prone processes can be avoided.
With the Smart Handling Function Kit, the user can be guided through the commissioning process intuitively and the overall time can be reduced by up to 80 percent. The servo drive is automatically parameterized after connection – with visual feedback guidance for fast axis reference correction. When setting up the transfer process, the user selects the appropriate function module from the library through the web software, drags and drops them sequentially and moves them to the correct position, and completes the parameter setting. All operations are visualized and no programming knowledge is required. The software checks the input information as required by the configuration process to avoid errors. With the help of ready-to-use programming modules, it is possible to communicate with higher-level control systems via OPC UA.

Digital process monitoring
During operation, the operator panel ensures transparency. The process flow and current process parameters such as position and speed can be viewed at any time. The Bosch Rexroth ctrlX AUTOMATION automation platform provides the necessary basis for application-specific software solutions. It breaks down the traditional boundaries between the world of machine control, information technology and the Internet of Things. Based on Linux real-time operating system, open standards, application programming technology, web engineering and comprehensive IoT connectivity.
With ctrlX AUTOMATION as the control basis for the intelligent function suite, Bosch Rexroth linear robots are IoT-enabled and provide users with not only analysis tools, but also interfaces to quality systems. The subsystem integrates all elements for efficient operations, demand-based production changes, or zero-error policy implementation.
Due to its high process transparency and the ability to compress multiple processes into a single system, productivity increases compared to previous multi-axis systems. The new intelligent linear robots are highly connected and available worldwide and can be used for a range of handling tasks, from pick-and-place, positioning and palletizing, to feeding, separating, stacking, and even checking, assembling, and fastening. Once the robot is manufactured, its configuration and process sequence can be used as a template for promotion or a template for quick modification.
